whats the diff between AMD duron, athlon, and thunderbird?
I want a slot 1 (slot a...whatever) processor....... I am also thinking bout the DUAL cpu..... but i heard that no OS has support for this.... whats the point of a dual mobo if the OS can't support it?! --==-- |

Why is it that you want a slot processor?

Duron - AMD's answer to the Celeron. It's their low end chip, it's a good chip for being low end.
Athlon - There are two types, the original Athlon and the Thunderbird. The original uses older technology and is Slot 1. They are the mid-range processers. You don't want one. Get a Duron instead. Thunderbird - The best ones. Socket 1 and a smaller trace. The expensive ones are still fairly cheap. Is there a Slocket adapter that can be used with the Thunderbirds? |

stupidzbu,
I think you mean that you want a socket A. Slot A is the old way it was done, socket A is cheaper and faster. Athlon- older, slower chip w/ 512k cache, if memory serves. T-bird - less cache, but full speed, so it's faster. Duron - less cache than either of above, but gives 90 to 99% of the performace for less money and less power use. Dual CPU is overrated. It takes special software to run both CPUs at the same time on the same task. Don't expect a huge jump in Q3 or UT. Multiprocessor is great for some things, like special server apps, but that's about it. Scojo |

I really wasn't interested in putting forth the effort of explaining unless I knew it would be understood. Dig it?

Windows NT supports multiple processors, but there aren't many games that support NT. Also I didn't think you could get a motherboard that supported multiple Athlons ?!??!

http://www.betanews.com has an article on TYAN i think.... that is coming out with a dual athlon mobo....
I want slot A .... because i hate dealing with ppga/fcpga chips.... slots are easier to put in and take out.... What i want to do is run a server. I already have 2 hard drives, one 60 gig maxtor and one 45 gig WD... I bought 256 megs of ram from Accessmicro...... and I'm runing the stupid server from a 366 celery with the ram.... it doesn't have enough power.. cause i can't do much with the puter when the damn server is up.. and everyone is browseing/downloading... we ran it on my friends AMD 750 (think it's on an athlon.. he bought it retail from fry's for about $250 5 months ago...i think) and i was able to do EVERYTHING just fine.... so..... the duron is like a celery..... so that sucks..... basically you guys recommend a t-bird then? and no... this will not be overclocked (already burnt 2 celerys... actually my friend did... moron forgot to put on the cpu fan when he put it on the board).... --==-- |

No, the Duron is not like a Celery. It is much better, just not quite as good as an Athlon.
T-Birds only come in Socket A, but they are the ones I would reccomend. |
