Question

This fall my PSX started having trouble reading games copied onto CDRs. The FMV has become choppy and sometimes the game won't load at all. I cleaned the motors and lense, to no avail.

Has anyone else encountered this? Anyone have any ideas on how to make the PSX like my CDRs more?

Lens assembly..

Most likely, your lens assembly is slightly out of focus. Regular CD's are a lot more forgiving then CD-R's for reading.

Check to see how much a new assembly would cost..

$ .02

I have a 5100 series...

...does that help?

I realize the 1000's had some problems reading the discs.

I am a decent electrician. Is there a place that I can buy PSX parts or get a service manual that will tell me what to do to repair my lense?

Does it have trouble reading games that were previously playable, or are these new games of which you have made "back-ups"? If you used a different kind of CD-R than ones that previously worked, the problem may lie in the disc. I've heard that you can try using green magic marker around the edge of the disc to stop the reflection of the laser beam through the edge of the disc.

good idea...

...but it didn't work. I tried all the reflection-suppression techniques, and although it helped a bit, it didn't keep the FMV from being way choppy (2-3 fps).

The discs are backups (Buckaneer-ware). (YHARR!) The legit discs seem to run fine. I'm going to take my psx apart and see if I can see why it might be out of allignment.

Thanks for all the input so far.

All I know is, that when my 1000 series started doing that, the new laser/motor unit I ordered did not fix the problem.

well...

I took the sucker apart and cleaned everything. When I got it back together I noticed that sometimes it runs better with the lid open (the lid puts pressure on the spindle...). It now plays the FMV in Chrono Cross prefectly and in StarTrek Invasion...OK-ably. Oh well. It was old and cheap.

My friend has the old 1000 model and we turn it upside down to play the games. I think the Sony explanation was that it helped heat escape.

A few things you should look at
check out memorex cdrs, the new ones are better for the old psx. new imations aren't that great for them. I think the color'd Maxell's are good. those with red and green top layers.

What speed are you burning these games at? the old psx read better the slower you burn the games at. 2x is the slowest I can personally stand, dunno about you.

Interesting....

I never thought about burning the CD's slower. Does that actually effect anything?

in the older psx, a slower burn is better and it did make the games more playable
