i was just wondering which would be better for ripping dvd from a dvd player to my computer in a mpeg1 or mpeg2 format?
what i mean is the quality good bad? should i try something else...( i don't want a seperate card lika pinnacle) i'm lookin for a combo card like the ati all in wonder radeon. ![]() thx in advance ![]()

I don't think it matters
It seems to me that most of the rippers out there use a software decoding, since the hardware output usually goes right out the back of the computer (isn't decoded internally). I could be wrong about that, though. Either way, both Radeons use the same hardware for Motion compensation and aliasing.

hmm...but wouldn't pulling the video over from the player to the comp, have a loss in quality. And doesn't it differ with different cards?? or it doesn't matter because you're pulling it from a dvd player?

I agree with Bires, ripping dvds is basically reading the dvd as data directly off the disc and converting it to another format. i think this would really bypass any need for hardware decoders and just rely on the main processor(s) for the ripping. the better the processor, the faster the decoding. the only reason people need hardware decoding is for realtime rendering of the video. you can have a perfect picture without a hardware decoder or a good video card like the radeon, but it would be EXTREMELY slow and jerky.
