I want to upgrade this mug. 500 mhz P3
Question is, how easy is the switch to a new one. Is it as simple as removing the old on and putting the new one on the board. If you'd shed some light onto this for me I'd appreciate it. Danka |

first you have to find out what motherboard you have and see if it can support the cpu you want to upgrade to. If it does support it, once you get the cpu you simply switch the old one with the new one and set the front side bus (frequency) and multiplyer clock on the motherboard to match the cpu spec.

I'm thinking of getting a 1 gig P4. Pros, cons? |

no can do
P4's come in 1.4ghz and 1.5ghz There are no 1ghz P4's Maybe you mean 1ghz P3? I doubt your motherboard would support it. (i dont know, just a guess) If i had to upgrade both my motherboard and cpu i'd get a 1ghz AMD. and come to think of it, its probably cheaper to get a new motherboard and cpu than to upgrade to a 1ghz P3 |

I thank you for taking the time to respond.
Would you care to suggest some starting point for all this? Places to look, research? And sorta going in a different direction; I was going to upgrade to make my gaming better on the PC. Is there a different route altogether that would be better? Say upgrading my memory, RAM, all that good stuff, or is the CPU the way to go? Thanks again! |

AMW, the easiest way to find out the spec of your system is to call Gateway. Tell 'em the model number and asked for the potential upgrade of items in your mind. There are so many options for you to upgrade the system. CPU, memory, video card, sound card (soundblaster Live! value uses less CPU than Aureal sound board) and etc. Once you find out the spec of your system, come back to this forum and we shall help you upgrade according to your need.

I dont think it could support 1ghz. I just upgraded as well. This is what I just bought A 900T-bird and Abit KT7(A combo)for $300, and some mushkin ram, about 380 for both. Good luck

If not, overhaul your computer. I have had less than steller experience upgrading Gateway oem Mobos. If you want to get fast, replace your Mobo, get 150MHz mem, and a T-Bird or fast P3/P4.
If money is an object, consider the P3-850's. Their prices have dropped quite a bit lately, and chances are your Mobo will support it just fine. My $.02 |
