Question on the Deal on DLink gigabit switch
Can someone tell me if all my computers would take instant advantage of a gigabit switch or do they need specific network cards etc to take advantage of the speed?
thx

Computers with gigabit networking hardware would notice a speed difference. Any other network card would work at it's own speed. If the card supports jumbo frames (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jumbo_Frames) you'd get faster throughput with a decrease in CPU usage.

Pretty much, Gigabit ethernet only works if you have gigabit connections on all your network computers.
This includes all switches, hubs, and NIC cards. Your data will slow down to the least common denominator if you try to share data to a PC with a slower connection. Your connection to the internet should be unaffected in either case (since the ethernet doesn't move anywhere near as fast as a gigabit in most households.) You don't need "specific" network cards to make it work... as long as they are "gigabit rated" you should be fine transmitting data between them at gigabit speed.
