Blu-Ray Outpaces HD-DVD in U.S

BUt remember that Sony was giving away free movies with their PS3 player which probably count in the total.

Blu-Ray Outpaces HD-DVD in U.S.
New Details from Home Media Research

According to the recent research performed by Home Media Magazine, the movies on Blu-ray disks were selling twice as good in the first half of this as the movies on optical HD DVD media, Reuters reports.

They claim that from January 1 through July 1, 2007 they sold about 1.6 million Blu-ray disks in the US only, using a Sony Corp-backed technology. HD DVD disks sales volumes over the same period of time reached only 795 thousand copies. HD-DVD was developed by Toshiba Corp and backed by Microsoft Corp and film studios such as Warner Bros.

Both formats were launched in spring of 2006. An estimated 3.7 million high-definition discs have been sold, including 2.2 million in Blu-ray and 1.5 million in HD-DVD through the end of July, according to Home Media.

At the same time the sales of Blu-ray disks are picking up outside the United States, too, namely in Singapore, Hong Kong and Eastern Europe. The demand for new-generation consumer DVD players is growing as well. However, HD DVD devices seem to be selling better. The thing is that the best value HD DVD player from Toshiba is currently available for about $300, while the most affordable Blu-ray solutions are offered for $500-$600.

The industry-wide standards war is reminiscent of the VHS and Betamax battle.

Blockbuster Inc, the largest U.S. provider of home movie entertainment, in June set out plans to line its shelves with Blu-ray DVDs, saying Blu-ray rentals were "significantly outpacing" HD-DVD rentals.

I have a feeling that Blu-Ray will win the format war.

actually, the probably don't really count, since it's like 2 years before you get the stupid things. Plus, HD DVD was doing something similar.

Blu-ray is likely to win just because of the PS3. The only caveat to that is what walmart will end up doing. If walmart, as rumored, goes with a super cheap hd dvd player, then it gets interesting again. I'm not worried about it either way, since clearly, they can make players that play both, so it seems to me once the battle is over, you'll still be able to find players that handle whatever format.

I think you need to vacate the caboose. My only "TV" is my computer monitor.

So wrong.

Yeah, I don't really watch TV, but I use my TV for my xbox360, my Wii, and movies. So at some point it'd be nice to go to an HD.

Why's that? (Not that I support Blu-Ray, or really know enough to support either)

Isn't HD-DVD equally as DRMed. Do they have a more liberal usage policy?

Didn't Bill Gates say that he was opposed to content blockage?

When did he change his position on it?

Bill gates has almost nothing to do with HD-DVD.

Toshiba is the main company invested in HD-DVD

Are you thinking of Steve Jobs
http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughtsonmusic/

There he says basically he wishes DRM would go away

Why couldn't one of the formats have just beaten the other to market by a year or so, then it wouldn't be a war at all . Although I still don't see how they are having a new media war when it's still a relatively small percentage of people that actually have HD.

They still sell VHS at the Walmarts around here, at least in the "Southern" Border Walmarts.

War is good. It encourages prices to drop fast.

And also a lot of people to sit back and watch the foray and wait for something to take a commanding lead. Which then makes the studios have to jump back and forth on who they want to back.

Also the multi-format sucks for people that want to watch something from one of the other Factions exclusive studio movies.

Only if you are an "early adopter".

Personally, I just sit back and wait and watch the carnage in the valley from the hillside.

again, I don't think it will really matter. This isn't like VHS/Beta, where the formats are totally incompatible. In a couple of years you'll be able to get a multi format player fairly easily, I bet.

Kinda like ending up with +R and -R CD and DVD recorders...

but honestly I think having 2 formats just leads to more problems in the long run (like why it seems that more players like the -R format better than the +R, therefore why not just get rid of +R and be done with it. )
