my comp can't connect to the wireless!!!

so...i'm stuck using my cousins pos lappy....but it's what i'm using to post to you guys. anywho...my stupid wireless can connect to the netgear mr814 wireless router...but for the life of me, i caannot connect to the internet. I used to be able to connect to the internet, but now...for some odd reason, it just quit. i have no idea what the heck happened.

i know it must be my problem, because my other cousins macbook connects just fine to the router.

but me, i'm using a USB ma101 netgear 802.11b hookup. and for some odd reasons it stopped working.

the odd thing is...i can see and connect to the router, and at times, i can go on the internet at 5 second intervals. but for the most part, i can't connect on the internet. ideas?

I had a laptop that worked fine on wireless. Than after i tried connecting to my friends secure network, it wigged out and would see networks, and say it was connecting but would never connect. I deleted all of the drivers, and hardware recognition of the device, and then restarted the computer. it found drivers from the original installation folder on the computer and it began to function normally.

just a thought... good luck.

make sure the usb wireless adapter isn't switching between your cousin's wireless network and somebody else's. If it is, turn on the preferred network option in wireless network properties so it does stop switching.

Question...

Do you have MAC addresses enabled in your router? Do you have any Encryption Security protocols enabled? (WEP, WAP, etc...)

When you look at the router's config, does it see the laptop in question as a connected device?

If it doesn't, I'd recommend setting the wireless access to the lowest settings (Turn off MAC address filtering and turn off Encryption security) and then try to access the internet with your laptop.

If you can stay on for more than 5 seconds after doing this, then add the MAC address to the MAC filter and then see if you can still get on to the internet.

If you can... then enable your encryption protocol (if necessary).

Good luck with getting your connection re-established.

I feel your pain Cheesy because I had the exact same setup. It drove me crazy. Til this day I don't know why my internet would decide to quit. I ended up getting an internal PCI network card to connect to my router which is the same as yours.

I used that usb thing on a different PCs and it was just horrible. It would work for a day and then suddenly nothing. Doesn't that frickin' blinking green light drive you crazy??

ahha...funny thing df....i can't access the router. it's my uncle and aunties router and they lost everything. hehe.

but i would assume it was a problem with my computer.

since for the first 2 - 3 weeks it worked...then now...it just stopped working. my other cousins computer has worked since the beginning. and it's just my computer that isn't working now. WHY OH WHY!!??!

Most routers have a "reset" button.

Usually you can go in and reset everything back to factory settings and start over.

yeah....i know if i screw around with the router it has the potential to cut off the whole house network. at the moment, it's only my computer thats not working. And i'm only here for 1 more week...so i think i'm gonna have my uncle and aunt smile at me when i leave instead of them wanting to kill me for breaking their router =) one week of not using my own computer...i'll try to manage

I understand...

Yet and still... they are in for a world of hurt if their router ever decides to drop connection and they don't know the passcode to get into it.

Oh well.. at least you only have to deal with it for a week.

BTW... it would be funny if your Aunt and Uncle never changed the default password of "password" as far as gaining access to it.
