Recommend me a Networking Solution
So I've got a desktop and a laptop and one ethernet connection (university apartment). When I'm at home I don't really carry my laptop around. It just sits right next to my desktop. Can somebody recommend me a good setup that will allow me to get internet access on both computers? An additional bonus would be for the two computers to be able to share files over the network. Please give me an approximate cost estimate for the solution you propose. I'd like to go the cheapest route, without sacrificing too much speed.
THANKS! ![]() |

Just buy a router. Many options out there. There may be a FAR one. Cheapest solution buy a used one from craigslist like this one: http://orangecounty.craigslist.org/ele/411226156.html

I'm contradicting myself here, but what if I did want wireless internet for my laptop. Would I just get a "wireless router?"
How about something olike this? http://newyork.craigslist.org/mnh/sys/422503465.html Last edited by ArkiStan : 09-14-2007 at 08:24 PM. |

Yup. If you want to spend more money get a NAS (network attached storage) drive. I got one a few weeks back and it is awesome. Basically it is a external hard drive that plugs into your router and you can access it from all computers on your network and some have services that allow you to access your data from the internet from anywhere in the world.

That would aactually be really convenient. It would also be nice to have the option to connect a printer as a network printer. But then again. I really don't use my laptop at home enough to justify an elaborate setup. It's all really tempting though.

Is your printer parallel or USB? If it has a parallel connection, you can get network print servers for really cheap on ebay. The device plugs into the parallel port of your printer, and then into an ethernet port on your router. Then you can print to it from any machine on your network.
Similar to these: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...+ex&category0= If your printer is USB only, you can get the same thing but it costs more: http://search.ebay.com/search/search...e=search&fgtp= |
