I'm thinking about replacing everything (tower, motherboard, processor, video card)... My old system is just too freaking old... Suggestions? I'm going to build it up myself and am looking to spend ~$400-500.
Thanks :-)

Did you say you wanted to upgrade your old computer?
So your 17" monitor I assume with cost at least $250, I should probably say $300, but I don't know where you live. Then you have $200 to play around with for the rest. Don't think it's going to happen bud. ![]() |

Nah... forget the eMachines. Get an Asus 810 chipset motherboard ($100), Celeron 600 ($75), Case ($30), 128MB RAM ($50), Winmodem ($20), 7200 RPM 20 gig HD ($100), gut your old computer and transfer your old floppy and CD-ROM (unless it's a less than a 20x CD, then spend $40 and get a 48x CD).
Yes, 810 chipset... but that's a pretty sweet computer for $375. I was figuring in tax and everything. Especially if you overclock that mutha to 900 MHz. Oh yeah, $15-$25 for a better Heatsink/Fan. There you go... under four hundy. Even better if you move your old modem (what I did) to your new computer. Am I missing something? That still sounds too inexpensive. The 810 has sound and video... I think I covered it all. And maybe your next $100 goes to a GeForce MX card if you want to do some gaming. Or wait 'till the GeForce GTS's are $100. Shouldn't be too long, eh? nVidia is pretty good about coming out with new stuff to top their previous bests. Dave. |

I guess I wasn't too specific the first time... I was always planning on keeping my speakers/cdrom/floppy/mouse/keyboard/modem/printer and was only looking at upgrading the heart of the system, i.e. motherboard, processor, case, RAM, and maybe the hard drive. I'm not worried about getting some badass sound card, I think thats what a stereo is for
![]() It seems like you could get a pretty decent system spending about $100 on the mother board, $100 for the processor, $100 for the RAM, and $50 for the case which is only $350. Thats what I was looking for recommendations on (Thanks Dave . E-machines suck and I would never want them. I don't need that latest and greatest Pentium, but there are some pretty decent machines out there I think that I could get. Apparently though most of you think that about $1000 is what you need for upgrading... |

"Or wait 'till the GeForce GTS's are $100. Shouldn't be too long, eh? nVidia is pretty good about coming out with new stuff to top their previous bests." Don't be too sure about that guys. GeForce 3 is scheduled to come out in March at $400.

The point is Dave GeForce 2 GTS cards won't be dropping in price much over the next few months. 32 meg GTS's are readily available for under $200 now. Think about how the market will be segmented. Nvidia will have a high cost, high performance videocard which will be the GeForce 3. Then below that pricewise and performance wise will be the GeForce 2 Ultra and Pro's. At the bottom end of the market (~$100) will be the GeForce 2 MX's. It makes little sense for videocard makers to price GTS videocards in the same price range as GeForce 2 MX videocards. Expect prices on GeForce 2 Ultra's and Pro's to drop over the next few months especially when GeForce 3 comes out.

That's an interesting angle, but I disagree. I think in the next month or so that the GTS will be able to be had, by hook or by crook (deal or coupon), for near the current MX prices... Especially with the way Radeons are performing and priced and with the looming new nVidia card.
So I would keep an eye out for those kind of prices. Dave. |
