My power supply blew up

So, i get back from hawaii in my new place setup my comp for the first time and click on the power and i hear a pop then i start smelling some funny stuff...

crap i bet the PS blew. So i pulled it out took it outside and smelled it... yep that's the stench.

So now i need a new PS.

my current system is about 4 yrs. old or more. It's an old A64 3000 or something like that, not dual core.

I guess i'm wondering if i should just get something cheap or try something future proof. I'd really like something that's pretty efficient.

the old enermax 350 that blewup was a pretty great supply and lasted for like 6 years.

any ideas for efficient high quality PS's? i don't know names anymore... running through newegg now.

crossing my fingers hoping that nothing else went BOOM

EDIT: man some of these supplies look fricking ridiculous. I just want a 2 fan supply that doesn't such down too much juice.

Ultra makes a "Lifetime Series" power supply that's both relatively cheap and has a 120mm fan for a cool and long life (also a limited lifetime warranty)

I've used a Thermaltake like this one in the past couple of computers I've built. It might be a bit overkill for you, but it has a good price after rebate and is reasonably efficient.

I'd recommend the Thermaltake or Corsair power supplies -- both of them tend to be good.

i have a ultra and the company great if there should be a problem. thermaltake are ok to. don't buy a unit under 450 watt and the higher the better. also make sure it main power plug will work for a 20 and 24 plug mb ~

Excellent choice there.

From what I've found, the Corsair PSUs deliver very clean power, and are quite efficient even at lower loads.

I agree, damn good name and stats, damn good reviews (my top buying point). I personally don't count on a rebate as part of the purchase price, more like a bonus if it actually goes through, so maybe a little pricey by my prefs. But hey, looks like a good unit.

A PSU is one area you generally don't want to skimp on -- too much can go wrong!

UPDATE: I'm not sure what the heck i did, but when i turned on my PC this time with the new PS i got smoke from my hard drive controller panel... just a puff... eff me i hope my HD didn't blow up.

I must be having some grounding issues or there's a short somewhere that's tossing my salad. Oh and btw, the 4 pin connector pins going to the mobo seem to not match my mobos pattern. It's a square 4 pin plug and the shaped pins dont line up... I wonder if i bombed myself doing something crazy.

at this point i'm out of ideas. The comp tries to turn on but just blips and won't finish the action.

anyone?

UPDATE! my motherboard just caught on fire! woo new computer time!

Ouch... I feel for you, I remember a few things going wrong in my first diy rig, but that's got to stink. (no pun intended) I hope your hard drive is still ok. There are companies online that can recover files for you. Feel free to ask for suggestions if you are trying your hand at another rig. One question though... has anyone had any experience with abs.com pcs, ibuypower.com pcs, puget custom pcs, and other build-to-order companies? You may want to check into those companies, clutchy, i.e. if you want to "build" your next machine and you don't want to buy from dell/alienware, sony, hp/voodoo, gateway or apple etc.

man i've been a DIY'er for 8 years... this was my 6th comp i've built and unfortunately my knowledge made cocky and now my comp is kaboom.

On the upside i get to build a new one
