Mouse Recommendations (I hate stiff middle buttons)
(Obligatory "That's what she said.")
I'm in the market for a new nice mouse since I broke my Logitech MX518 recently. While it was a great mouse, one gripe I always had, and I heard the same goes for other high-end Logitech mice is that their middle buttons are very stiff. I use the middle button A LOT in my line of work (panning around in CAD, 3D modeling, etc) and I need it to have normal resistance, not extra stiff. Can anybody recommend a great mouse that has a middle button with normal stiffness as well as two side thumb buttons (go back/fwd while web surfing)? It's the single most critical tool in my work so I'm willing to pay a lot. Wired is a plus and laser sensor thingies are also cool. |

I'd place votes for the Logitech G5 and G9

Sometimes you can mod the mouse to make the middle button glide around instead of click around

I use a "gamer" mouse (razer diamondback) at home and work. Middle button "clicks" but is very smooth. It is also a very light mouse. Got them from a woot-off.

I think he wants the middle button to click easily when pressed... not scrolled. I have a Logitech G9, and the middle button isn't extremely hard to press, but it does have more resistance than the standard left/right mouse buttons.

some of the logitech mice you can click the center button and it goes from clicking to freewheeling. It's amazing if you use spreadsheets alot which i do.

I also cast my vote for the freewheeling option on the g9, although the scroll button is on the stiffer side when pressed down.

as guruX mentioned I need the middle button to "click" without too much resistance. smooth scrolling would also be great, but free-wheeling is not an option for me. I need it to stop on its own. I've heard the high-end Logitechs such as the G5 or G9 all have middle buttons that are very stiff to click. So I'm looking for other nice mice. However, if a cheap mouse has everything I need that's even better.
I'm looking into Nija's recommendation, the razer diamondback, and other cheaper mouses. thanks everybody. |

When you say "smooth" are you talking about the clicking or scrolling? My main concern is the middle button being easy to press and click. Of course scrolling should also be smooth and effortless. I'm reading amazon user feedback for the Razer Diamondback and Deathadder. Any user experience here? |

The middle button is easily depressed. When moving the middle mouse button up or down there is no hard "clicking" (especially compared to my previous logitech mouse [mx1000]). |

Got the Razer Deathadder. It is exactly what I was looking for. Comfortable right had design. Soft yet tight middle button click feedback. Two big and accessible thumb buttons. Soft and thin cable doesn't get caught in stuff on desk. Resolution is nice. And it glows!!
They say you should invest in a nice bed since you spend one third of your life on it. This mouse was pricey but a great investment considering I spend two thirds of my life on it. Thanks for everybody's input. ![]() |
