Question

Hi all, looking to purchase an inexpensive scanner for home. I run 98SE and Win2k, have USB ports, also a SCSI card.

Nothing too special I can think of. Probably scan some photos on occasion, other bits of random junk. I've seen a bunch under $100.00 and was thinking that would do me well, just wondered if anyone had good/bad experience w/a particular brand.

Don't buy the HP 5200. All I've had are problems with this scanner.

I like my microtek, except that when the power goes out, when it comes back on, the scanner just scans up and down, endlessly, until the computer is turned on.

I bought a pretty nice Plustek brand flatbed scanner that can do 1600 DPI and 32 bit color... but if you are going to be posting your pictures on the web, you don't need or want anything more than 100 DPI. At 1600 DPI scan of a 3X5 photo gives you something like a 50 Mb file!

If you are going to be doing digital photo editing, you might want that resolution, but otherwise, don't sweat it.

As far as the connector goes, USB gives you decent bandwidth and great convenience.

I just bought a new scanner for W2K because my old one was not compatible. It's an Epson Perfection 12xx something. It seems to work fine. Make sure what ever you buy specifically says W2K compatible.

Thanks for all your input! I'll probably settle on something in the next day or two.

The one I got was just some generic brand that I got because I sort of wanted one and it was on sale @ Fry's. It was like $30. I have never had a problem with it and it scans beutifully. It has 3d scanning, too. I can put an apple on it and it will scan it showing that it is a 3d image.

A bunch of nice features for $30. I don't understand why there are scanners that cost $700, especially when they don't hold any bigger images.
