Does anyone have an opinion about who makes better cable/dsl routers, SMC or Linksys? Since they both cost about the same, I'm not sure which one to go with. Thanks for any input!

I prefer SMC over Linksys. Their routers usually come with more features for the same price, such as a print server.

I'd second the SMC. You get more features, fewer problems (a lot of people I know have had disconnect problems with the Linksys. A LOT). Also, you get more speed, roughly 4.0Mbps compared to 2.9Mbps.
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/..._chart_pg2.htm Here are practically networked's recomendations: http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...mendations.htm It wins for both the 7004BR (wired) and 7004WBR (wireless and wired). |

It also depends on what kind of connection you will use it on. There are a lot of cable or DSL setups that won't even get the 2.9Mbps.
I have the Netgear one. It works fine for the speed of my cable modem. It was also free. Loved those Amazon gift certificates. ![]() But, ya. Between SMC and Linksys, go SMC. |

According to the link Apex gave, the SMC has no uplink jack. I'm no networking guru, but don't you need an uplink jack in order to share a cable modem connection, or any connection for that matter?

hmmm... It should have at leat 2 jacks, one that says "local" and one that says "cable/DSL" or "remote". The "remote" one is where you connect the line coming from your cable/dsl modem and the "local" is where you connect the line going to your computer, switch, or hub.

Actually on the SMC, at least mine, say WAN. WAN is where you want to plug in your cable or DSL modem.

I HATE the power line in on my SMC. The slightest bump or touch and the damn thing loses power. I used some electrical tape to hold it in place better. Just putting the tape on without removing the plug, it lost power a couple times. Anyone else have this problem with their SMC?

Not here. You should probably contact their tech support and get an RMA.

I have the SMC router and found the COM port useful because my DSL company is screwing with me. It's always good to have a backup. I think I am using every port they put on that thing!

what about.....
SOHO Routers? I have one and mine runs perfectly. Compared to my friends Router, mine is a god. he is running a LinkSys and if you just try to get two games of Counterstrike or Quake 3 going over the net, it crashes.
Whereas mine i can run 4 games on all four of my computers and not crash once. SOHO!! hehe
