Hey all. I'm putting a list together of hardware to use for a simple and VERY quiet internet terminal. I'll either run Win98 or Mandrake 7.2. For hardware I'm thinking a P166 with a big heatsink and no fan, simple video card with just a heat sink, and under-volting the fan in the PSU to quiet it down. I'd use a KVM switch so I can share those things. Insulate the case, etc. Thoughts?

Thumbs up

For me at least, it seems like you got it all figured out. All things just heatsinks, lower the psu fan speed, insulation...

yep. That would be pretty much silent.

For the hard drive, Maxtor has a very quiet line of 5400 and 4400 rpm drives. You might look into a laptop hard drive due to their small size and low rpm/noise.

Other than that u have a good plan.

Silent PS

There are also completely silent fanless PS's you can buy. Not sure of your budget but if you just want to browse the net you could set up linux to load everything into a ram disk and work off the ram disk shutting the hd down after bootup.

Processro

Also if you get a processor that rated for higher mhz like a k6-2 500 and run it at 300 it will probably be very stable without a fan. again i guess the budget thing though

If all you want is a browser, have you considered an internet appliance? Look at the 3Com Audry - $500 and you're good to go - no HD, so completely silent:

With a USB ethernet adapter, you can just hook it into your home network.
