How long did your (or the average) pencil trick last?

I didn't want to have to worry about the pencil traces "fading", so I used the conductive ink pen.

Mine is still lasting. It was unlocked about 4 1/2 months ago and it still works. It survived 3 heatsink changes and 2 different motherboards without any need for a touch up.

I've done about the same amount of work and changes to my cpu as PaulC has done. Except that I've had mine penciled in since about 8 months ago. Still running fine, one of the reasons I'd not use ink or tape is that with pencil you can erase and return if something happens. Not so with tape or ink.

The pencil trick is when you connect the L1 bridges with a pencil to unlock the multiplier on an AMD t-bird or Duron
example: originally the bridges are like this -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- then you connect those and they look like this ----- ----- ----- -----

Hmm, I don't know about the tape because I've never seen or heard it being done before. But I'm going on 9 months with my pencil trick deal and it hasn't failed yet. That is with me changing the cpu from one mobo to another quite a few times and changing the HSF on it also. So I really don't see the reason why you would want to put tape over it. Also, the tape could possibly melt onto the cpu since the cpu can get pretty hot. So my feeling towards it is why mess with something that works as is. But if you do find some more info on this I'd like to know. Thanks.

chosenfool - yeah......I think that tape does work to keep it on the L1 bridges. I don't know if you can put tape over all of the bridges....I wouldn't....I would just put them on each seperate bridge.

Somewhere I saw it suggested that once you are satisfied with the bridging of the connectors that you "seal" the traces with clear fingernail polish. That's what I did after I used the conductive ink.

Now sealing it with nail polish sounds like it would work and seems logical. Because the lead does tend to rub off if your not careful in handling the cpu.
