I have a few questions I hope someone will be able to help me answer.
I have a four year old PC and everytime something goes horrendously wrong, or I just want to start afresh, I copy my important stuff to one half of my partitioned hard drive and wipe the other half. I then reboot, and use a floppy disk to install the cd-rom driver so I can reinstall Win98. I am just about to upgrade (1.33 athlon, A7M, 128DDR) and I have bought a Pioneer Dvd-rom drive (106s). It came with no drivers and I can find none on its website. I'm guessing detection is no problem in Windows, but what I was wondering is, how do I get into windows in the first place? Does the A7M bios detect the Dvd in the same way that my old computer detects the floppy drive, so I can use the dvd to install windows? If not, what should I do? Also, will the A7M be okay with my partitioned hard drive? I want to keep it that way until I can afford a new hard disk. Finally, how the does the onboard sound compare with a four year old ensoniq card? Thanks Chris7530 |

Your Win98 CD is bootable (if it is a legitimate copy, not a CD-R burned with just the Win98\Setup directory on it
). Set the boot order on your K7M to boot from the CD-ROM (it's a DVD-ROM, but just set it for CD-ROM). The boot menu on the Win98 CD will let you boot from the HD, start Installation or just boot to a command prompt. It's easy as that. If you know someone with WinME, format a floppy on their system (just plain format a: or format a:/u), then copy ALL the files from \windows\command\ebd to the floppy. That will make a generic boot disk with auto CD-ROM/DVD-ROM support. It has worked for my Yamaha CD-RW, HP CD-RW, Toshiba DVD-ROM and NEC DVD-ROM drives.

Windows will detect your plug and play dvd-rom and install it with no problems.
Look under drivers for a generic Pioneer dos driver. A7M will be okay with your partioned hard drive. Its windows that will deal with partions. Yes paulc is correct. Go into the bios and have the bios autodetect the dvd-rom. Than put the dvd as the first bootable device. http://www.bootdisk.com Cmedia CMI-8738's chip, which is used in Guillemot's lowcost Maxi Sound MUSE soundcard, is okay for office use and will be better than your 4 year old ensoniq card. But if you want better sound especially for gaming get a SBLive soundcard, Philips Acoustic Edge, Turtle Beach Santa Cruz or Hercules Game Theatre XP. http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showth...threadid=20831 (Asus A&M266 Sound problem) |
