I wasn't sure where to post this, but since this forum gets the most activity: CPU prices seem to have made their largest percentage decline in the last several months. Does anybody note any news that could change this trend to ever
increasing drop in prices? I keep waiting and all I see are really great deals on CPU's but I don't want to wait if there's a rapid rebound in the not too distant future. |

CPU prices aren't likely to rebound in the current climate.
Intel is pushing the P4 as their AMD-beater, with big MHz numbers on their parts, because that's what most people look for. As they're able to produce these more reliably in larger quantities, and as they introduce faster parts, their prices are coming down. This means that the rest of their range (including the PIII) must be dropped to follow suit. Meanwhile, AMD have got the T-bird variant of the Athlon going at some pretty ridiculous speeds, including a new core revision that looks like it's at least good to 1.5GHz. On top of that, Palomino should be available sometime in the not-too-distant future. The result there is the same - the slower parts keep dropping in price. CPU's aren't going to bounce back like RAM has. Quite the opposite - regardless of what you buy and when, you'll always be able to buy it for less a month or so later. As to whether this is the proper forum for this, probably not. ![]() |

The only way the chip prices will rebound is if INTEL or AMD screw up really really big. Around the time of the k6-2 AMD had some serious money issues. They were losing money on most of their chips. Even the ones that they were making money on, brought in virtually no revenue. If it wasnt for the success of the Athlon, they might have gone under.
So unless INTEL or AMD screw up big, and produce crap for 2 or 3 years, to the point where they lose all their money, there will not be a chip rebound. Aint competition great! I laugh at you Apple people.

Well, with the advent of Intel starting the price war with AMD I don't see how the prices could go back up any time soon. Hey, I for one am not complaining.
