Hi there, I don't have as much hardware experience networking as I'd like, and I'm sure you people out there do, so what in your opinions are the best brand of network switches out there? I'm looking for a 16 port switch in particular. As always price is a consideration, but I'd be interested to know what is the *best*, and what is the *best for the price*. I'd really appreciate some input. Thanks

The 'best' (IMHO) would be a Cisco 2912 or 2924 switch. That's 12 or 24 ports - Cisco does not offer a 16 port. You're looking at about $1k for the 12 port, and double that for the 24 port. This is a managed switch that offers some nice options like web and telnet interfaces, virtual LAN capability, port aggregation for up to 400Mbps bandwidth between switches, 3.2Gbps backplane, etc. You can read up on it here: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/cc/...h/malbu_wp.htm
If this is a little more than you are looking for, I would recommend Netgear or 3Com, then SMC or D-Link. With these, you're looking at about $150-400. They all offer pretty much the same plug & play performance. Some may be slightly faster, some may be slightly more reliable, but they're all pretty solid performers. |
