You're going to want to buy an MX that comes with faster memory, since the bottleneck lies in memory bandwidth... as long as you avoid Gainward (Cardex vid cards... GF2MX I has had the mem set @ 143, default spec is 166 and the memory wouldn't o/c to that level), you should be doing well...

Use cool bits registry hack to overclock.
Also use decent cooling for your MX like the blue orb. A card cooler also helps out in cooling. [Edited by sbp on 05-20-2001 at 09:59 AM] |

Well, MSI makes good motherboards (not familiar with the 6153va, though)... I would say that yes an old, slow HDD can really hold your system back... Western Digital is selling some really fast hard drives that have 20GB platters and spin at 7200 rpm. The models are the WD200BB, WD300BB, WD400BB, and WD600BB. Those are 20, 30, 40, and 60 GB, respectively. Maxtor also has some similar spec hard drives, the 5T060H6, 5T040H4, 5T030H3, 5T020H2, and the 5T010H1... Those are 60, 40, 30, 20, and 10 GB, respectively. First thing to do, IMO, is upgrade that HDD. After that, either a new CPU or video card. You can get the 1Ghz PIII for about $200 now, and the GF3 is down to about $363. Your memory is probably just fine (especially if you can run it at cas2). |

Also the IBM GXP series are VERY good choises If U have a P3@667 u could get some PC150 or PC166 (=750 or 830 MHz!) but then u would need a new mobo?? Well I have a old AOpen AX6BC, but it can take PC150, it runs awfully fine with PIIIs (With converter board from MSI) although it only has UDMA33 (Yerrrk). Clauzii, DK...
