As the subject says, which of the following heatsinks is best for me? My CPU is an athlon 1.3ghz. I will be only overclocking to ~1.4ghz. I just want to keep everything as cool as possible.
Volcano II Super Orb Golden Orb for AMD Copper Orb If none are these are appropiate for my needs, what do you suggest? In case you were wondering, these were the choices the local stores have. Thanks!

I would say the Volcano. I've never liked the orbs too much. If you want the ultimate in cooling go with the Global Win FOP-38, but be forwarned...it is very very loud!

Volcano II is the best cooler out of those four.
You know what I recommend already. (Super Orb enough for 1.3 @ ~1.4) |

Anyone out there running an Athlon 1.3 at stock speed with a Volcano II? What temps are you running at?

I am very curious as to why those are your choices.
I don't think any of those are really good choices for cooling a AMD processor. Try to find a ThermoEngine. It will outperform all of those choices. |

Ok I read that this is the second time you ask basically the same question.
Why did you not pay attention to sbp the first time, buy a SK6 if you want loud ultimate cooling and for quiet high quality cooling go for a ThermoEngine ThermalTake's products are great for Intel CPUs but when it comes to cooling a AMD cpu they don't seem to work all that great. |

jchow was considering those choices due to cost and because those were the only coolers available in his local stores. After talking with him in irc, jchow's going to see if his local store can get a SK6.

Wow, tempers flared for a sec. Thanks sbp for explaining. Well, I guess I have a few heatsinks to pick from now, SK6, ThermalEngine, and if worse comes to worse the Volcano II.
The ThermalEngine does come with it's own fan, but I hear it isn't that great but does work. It's also quiet which is important too... man.. this is harder than I thought. What's the best cpu fan that is quiet? No way to that huge delta jet engine i've read about... |

Cost is a bit of a problem. I do have to eat next year at University of Victoria and stuff.
What my main goal is to get the best cooling possible as I am plunkin $2000 Canadian for this system. But, I want it to be relatively quiet for an active cooled machine. And finally, the last stipulation is the HSF combo to be under $75 Canadian, which works out to a round $50 US. So from what I gather from this thread that my options are the SK-6 (a bit pricy), ThermalSonic ThermoEngine, and at the very least the Volcano II cuz it's what's difinately in the stores in my town. I'll just have to check tomorrow at my dealer and see about these. |

Go with a Alpha PAL6035. It is my heat weapon of choice. My 1.2G T-bird never goes above 40c, but is usually much less than that. |

Darn it, one of my stores doesn't carry all those forementions sinks, and the other store hasn't even heard of them, except for the brand name of Alpha... It's official, my PC stores here are tools. I guess I might have to go online to get a decent cooler. |

Hey there jchow. Welcome to the boards! Depending on where you live, you have a few choices. If you live in the Toronto area, then I would reccomend either Bigfoot computers, or Premier Computer Canada. The former is a web-based store, although they do have pickups if you would prefer that. The latter is a store, that's branched onto the web. You'll probably find that Premier Computer has what you're looking for, and if it doesn't then Bigfoot will.

the thermoengine offers the best performance for your dollar(even though it's canadian). It's quiet, and it goes for $27US. don't bother with the sk6 it comes w/ your jet engine on it not to mention it's crazy expensive. Alpha's are not even a viable option either (expensive and need a delta7k) just get yourself a thermo and keep the stock fan on it. It's quiet and semi-cheap, and cools like a madman. You can also get it with a delta if u want it works quite a bit better with that, but as you said it's really really loud.
and the fop38 lost it's crown a long time ago man. |

I think I fixed the link I agree with clutchy on this one The ThermoEngine will give the best price/performance/noise ratio available. Big emphasis on noise. Once Noise and Price drop out of the picture go for THIS!!! EXTREME SK6!!! |

BIG nod to guste on http://www.pccanada.com.
They have a Tthermoengine for 49.95 Canadian! I was going to get an Alpha since it's the only 'serious' cooler in the whole city, but it was for a whopping 70 bucks. Even with the 10 dollar shipping the Thermoengine is still cheaper, plus a better performer from what I gather here and various reviews on the net. Man, where would I be without Got|Apex forums? |

Get the SWIFTTECH aluminum heatsink.
I had a GlobalWin /with the 5400rpm fan on my Duron 600 and it ran about 45C. With the Swifttch it is down to 35C. My friend bought the same HS too. His ORB on AMD 1Gig was reaching 60-70. Now with the Swiftech it is 45C. I payed $40.00 for mine. hope that helps |

Thanks for the input everyone! After the many messages of deliberation, the ThermoEngine is finally my heatsink. It arrived at my door this morning in fact. Now I just need a cpu to strap it on... and a mobo.. heck a whole computer for Pete's sake. I'll be back with temps from my Athlon 1.3ghz and A7A.

Hello everyone!
Like I said, I'd be back with temps from my new rig. My final system which is sitting happily on my desk is as follows. Athlon 1.33ghz A7A266 256 DDR2100 Ram 40GB 7200RPM Maxtor HDD Radeon 64MB DDR VIVO SoundBlaster Live! Platinum 5.1 Teac 16x10x40x CDRW Pionneer 16x DVD 3com USR 56k Winmodem Enlight 19" case 300w Deer PSU 2 Chassis fans, make, cfm i really don't know. and finally my ThermoEngine. Phew. I'm gettin about 56 degrees Celcius at idle and 63 degrees Celcius at full load. I guess that's not bad. I hear the A7A reports hot. Are these about normal? |

that's kinda hot, but oh well if it runs it runs. I think it's cause you have all those high perf. drives in there i have the pioneer drive and it gets really hot... i have the enlight too, i've found in the front if you stick in a second fan in the opening of the plastic case fan holder it pumps out alot more air... if you have one sitting around it doesn't hurt...
