A dual 800 mhz MAC is a one powerful f***ing machine. Probably much more so than a 1.4 Ghz Athlon PC. It's just that none of us really ahve a use for that (replying on message boards ).

Oh woops, I used bad language And.....dont get me wrong, mac still sucks! ha! (just for you mac lovers)

Funny how everyone can be so quick to crap on Macs and Apple computers in general... But look closer on what you are getting... DVD-R/CD-RW burner combo, GeForce3 card, USB and Firewire (1394) enabled, gigabit ethernet, 803.11 (wireless connectivity), optical mouse... There is a use for this machine. If there wasn't, this company would be out of business and that's the bottom line

And people wonder why the price is so high. DVD-R just makes the price of a package like this much higher than it needs to be. For now, they are only good for MASS storage because of the price, even that, still expensive.

Ya, sure. This is really helpfull considering no person's harddrive can go fast enough to make this usefull prise wise over 10/100.

well, sure mac's have a purpose (footrest?, paper weight?)

but, if xsiled is right in saying you can get 7 1.4 athlon systems instead of that one mac (seven seems a bit high though), you know what....how about coding windows for distributed computing, and using 7 1.4's instead of that one/2processor stinkin mac?

and also, i think a better comparison would be the dual intel xeon's or dual athlon MP's (mp being the better processor, but when comparing w/ the mac, i'm sure you can let intel into the mix )

Alright......

Macs are mainstream in professional audio and video editing and creating and the graphics crunching ability that the MAC has is unsurpassed to that of any Intel or AMD rig of today or months down the road. Clock for clock the Mac can run Circles around an Intel and AMD based processor in what it does best and that is audio and video editing and creating. Even with PC emulation software a MAC still performs quiet well. With gaming maybe a MAC isn't for you but for the audio and video professional it is the only thing that can do their job effectively. Got to any advertising firm and look at what computers they use, all Macs, go to Dreamworks you will notice Macs, just because you can't justify spending that much money on a Mac doesn't mean it isn't worth it, it just means you ain't doing what it meant to be doing. Macs prices are high and it is partly because of the law of price and demand, people demand such product and for this price this many people are willing to buy it. Basically, Macs are not made for gaming, and if that is all you care about when it comes to computers then you are missing the whole picture.

I don't like Macs or use them. I have no use for them. But I like the fact that they are out there. They give people a choice in platforms. On the user level, people who are not going to waste a bunch of their time to learn Linux or BeOS or WinDoze. All they need is the functionality that the Mac offers. They are simple and easy to use, but still powerful. I would reccomend a Mac to anyone who did not want to invest the time in learning how to use a PC.

No you could not build 7 1.4 Athlon computers for what they want for the Mac, unless they are so stripped down as to be useless. Then what is the point?

If they are idiots, why are they rich? Because they didn't waste their time learnig computer skills that will be obsolite in 10 years? Because they started their own businesses and got rich? Or just because you are jealous and sitting in the room your parents pay for while you plink away on your PC keyboard?

well, i wasn't going to...but i gotta get in on this.

and i'm not going to be redundant here either...everyone (well i thought everyone) knows macs are stellar machines for graphics, multimedia, etc...

yes PCs are excellent gaming and all purpose machines...but where do you think most of the gaming graphics are produced? or at least initially designed?

macs serve a purpose...just like unix servers have a purpose and just like the overclocked sub 1000 dollar duron has its purpose.

saying a mac is bad and pc is good is like saying that a BMW 330 is stupid compared to a pickup truck.

computer racism is not funny. we're stuck on this planet together...let's try to respect each other.

Anyone hear of the "megahertz myth?" Basically, people need to stop looking at the raw Mhz and start looking at end performance. Mac continually spank Pentiums and Athlons that are 2-400Mhz faster. Part of the reason is the bloat that is MS Windows. Sure, Win2k and XP are getting faster, but they are still a far cry from the stability and streamlining that OS X has.

And to answer Speedfreak's claims:

DVD-RW - This machine is pointed towards the graphics/video editing set, where mass storage is needed.

Gigabit ethernet - Again, look at the market. Joe MacUser isn't gonna buy this machine. But a publishing house or movie house that requires quick connectivity will. Do you think Lucas is using 10 or 100 mbit connections? (Yes, Lucas is actually using Macs for portions of the next Star Wars)

Wireless connectivity/Optical Mouse - This is a standard among all Apples, and while it's not needed on this particular model, it sure is nice to see a company that is shipping computer with current technology. When was the last time you saw a PC go out the door with Wireless or optical mice?

Lastly, you're MULTImedia PC is great (heck, mine sure is), I'm sure games look pretty on it, and I bet the video editing is acceptable. But the people buying this aren't looking for acceptable. They're looking for the best. And right now, this is a bargain.

Thumbs up

I say good arguments by everyone, but...
To me this whole thing is like the Ford vs. Chevy deal, there has got to be rivalry in the ranks or else this gets boring, and, NT, UNIX and Linux will all run on MACs, so if you don't like OS X, switch!

P.S. Ford is just built better, take a look at under body construction, I wouldn't touch a Chevy with a 10ft pole, and I would rather have the BMW M3 then either

SOME BMW's are over rated, util the M series, but yes Macs quite often are over rated, I do like the idea of running Linux on one though, not to hot on running NT on one, seems dangerous... but it works amazingly enough...

As a person that enjoys games, I had to end up buying a PC. That is the reality. I hate to say that, but there was a time that I would absolutely, positively, without a shadow of a doubt NOT get a PC. But being open minded is about taking what's great on both sides and making it your own. I love my Mac, it's a wonderful machine it does a lot of things great! I enjoy my PC there are a lot of things that I can do with it also...

The only reason I felt responding was that many times we attack the things we don't understand, and we don't give it a chance, or try to make an informed opinion. I was part of this camp, attacking things I didn't understand. But the realization was that it was my own myopia and lack of understanding.

Anyone hear of the "adobe myth?" Basically, people need to stop looking at the adobe software benchmarks and start looking at real performance.

true, you can look at benchmarks untill your blue in the face guys (and girls) but what it all comes down to is how fast it runs what you want it to run and how well it runs what you want it to run not what apple shoves down your throat as ground breaking or"fastest on macs" or what is "enhanced" bottom line who the hell cares people?! are you that worried apple might claim the speed crown (in their eyes) in one area of computing that you need to put down what all together is a nice system although it costs alot

well, if you had been around a real PC, you'd know that MAC charges way too much to be a common desktop, and Photoshop runs just fine on my PC. But what does it really matter, just run Linux, then any Computer you get can run it, Intel,AMD (yeah!!), MAC, RISC, Alpha, whatever...

And again, I say why pay the extra for a Benz, they ride like a lumber wagon, thats why my friend got rid of all 4 of theirs, they went with BMW, nice ride, faster acceleration, and better handling, not to mention a higher top speed
