I don't think there is anthing that would work. If you are not subscribed to Cable tv, then the signal won't be sent.

Well....

The coxial cable that you have from the cable company feeds a cable tv signal all the time, whether it is hooked up or not, always on thing.
As far as a cable modem, it runs above and below the frequencies of regular cable tv and in order to get a cable modem connection they got to run cable to your house. They have no real cost effective way to separate the cable modem and cable tv feed.
In turn with the cable modem connection you will also be connected to the same coxial cable that supplies your cable tv from Maw Cable. So basically they are gambling on you only hooking the cable up to you cable modem and not splice it and run it to you TV.
If you have a cable modem you have cable tv that is all there is to it, in order to separate the signal they would have to run two separate lines to feed signal through that that is just not justafiable being most who have a cable modem have the cable service.
Where I am at they will not allow you to have a cable modem with buying into the cable service first.

They can place a filter on the line to kill the cable signal frequencies and still allow the modem frequencies.
If they do, all you have to do is replace it with anything that will join the two cables together, like a splitter or a double male fitting. The filter probably is a cylinder, an inch and a half long and with a 3/4 inch diameter. If you don't have any signal, look for one. It should be accessable, probably inside your house somewhere.

hmmm...

does that go the other way too? meaning, if you have cable tv, but not cable internet, would it be possible to just circumvent the cable co. and just buy your own cable modem and splice the signal somehow to get internet?

I'm in agreement with most of what Razz and evilcyclops posted. I was able to get the cable tv signal even though all I had was cable modem access. If you already have cable modem, you can check this by unplugging the cable from the cable modem and sticking it into your tv. You could split the cable coming into your house and all of your cable outlets would be supplying you cable tv. It will likely be the enhanced cable channels (not just your basic 2-18 crap..) but you won't get any premium (HBO, etc) or PPV channels.

Until just recently, I hadn't heard of the cable company filtering out cable tv if you ordered only cable modem. But it has happened in my apartment complex within the last month. They filter it outside my apartment (I'm not sure where). You might still be able to get some cable tv channels in the higher numbers (try 70 and above).

DaFunkyUnit: It won't work the other way because the cable modem company has to provision your cable modem for access and your computer name is also assigned by the cable modem company in most cases.

you cannot circumvent the cable tv service and put a modem on the coax line

If you order TV service you cannot just put a cable modem on the line and have cable modem service. The modems have serial numbers and hardware address numbers on them that the cable company enters into a database of modems that can access the cable modem service. Your best bet is to order cable modem and split the line to your tv's. My brother did this, he took off the line filter after the service tech left and they got cable tv and some hbo channels and cinemax (don't know how they got those extra channels though it wasn't a descrambler or anything).

im probly wrong but ive come to understand that a cable provider like @home can be accessed through any cable connection in its area. the username is the main thing to keep in mind.

example: you have a cable modem but dont pay for the service if you say take ur friends username CX#######-A and have them turn off their comp. then restart your computer with their username in your tcp/ip settings you can log on

hey if this is wrong im not sure how i did it then

Actually I've known a number of people who have had filters removed (i.e. free HBO, Cinemax, etc) by Comcast (@Home)technicians during installation because the cable modem connection was buggy or non-existant with the filters in place.

if i only subscribed to their cable modem services, can the cable companies somehow detect whether i am using my own cable boxes to watch cable tv?

seems like every cable company does their thing differently. i use ATT for cable modem...and when i tried splicing it...it didn't give me many more channels. nothing really worth it...they said if i wanted cable TV service...they'd run another line in...

My jackass roomate

I had @home in my first apt. I was able to get about 30 of the cable channels that I wasn't paying for. So when I moved, Comcast came out to install the service, and my moron roomate asked the tech if we'd still be getting the cable TV for free. Needless to say the tech installed a filter on the line in the wall of the only other cable port in the apt. What a moron.

i know what you mean,
my cable guy was so cool.
i called att to install cable modem service only
and asked if the cable guy could install cable tv also but he told me that there was already an unfiltered line goin in to my apartment so not only did he install my cable modem but he split the line for me to watch cable. cool cat!
