I am ready to assemble a low end system for a friend for copying CDG discs. The maximum speed for recording these discs is presently 8X, using CDRWIN. I will be using a Plextor SCSI 12/20 PLEX reader and one of the approved CDRWIN burners. I am trying to figure the minimum speed CPU for this system. Plextor seems to indicate that the minimum speed is a 233 MHZ for the reader, while I have seen 12X writers only specify 100 MHZ . He will be copying direct from the reader to the writer. If he goes direct, wouldn't that minimize CPU usage?
I can presently perform this function on my own computer, but it's a Pentium II 400. |

hummm.....
I have used a Pentium 166MMX in conjuction with a SCSI Yahama 4X burner before and it ran quite well. As for SCSI, it is less processor dependent than IDE and with this said it has the ability to run quite well on older systems, and multitasked without a hitch. Now as for a 233Mhz is a recommended minimum speed not necessarily the actual minimum. Try the setup on whatever system you wish, putting a 233Mhz minimum basically will cut out on there customer service calls.

yup with scsi, you can be in the classic pentium 166's and still be pretty good....
However, when you copy from cd to cd like you described....it'll only go straight from cd to cd whe BOTH drives are scsi. When one is ide, the processor still has to churn and do a whole lotta work... my recommendation, if both drives are scsi...GO!GO!GO! ![]() if not, just give it a try! media is so stinkin cheap anyways ![]() |

I am using a P100 (!) to burn CD´s at 4x (Mitsumi burner) and a 16x CD-drive: works fine, and since I have a Main machine too, it is no problem with the 4x burning speed.

if you are having trouble finding that ancient of parts though, you could build a burning machine dirt cheap:
Duron 700 $27 Gigabyte allinone board approx $90 16x Burner $72 16x dvd $60 (cause it will read a little more steady) a cheap case with 300w psu, $40 western digital 30gig 5400 $75 so for around $400, you could have a descent little machine to burn on, play mp3s and whatever else

Sounds all fine, except for the following: - Ancient machines are everywhere! - My P100 makes VERY little noise (I can actually barely hear my HD, which is the ONLY noisemaker). - It uses very little power: There went my scrambled eggs! - It was dirt cheap: 50$ - I do not use MP3s, only REAL quality audio works for me! - I do not want an AMD!!!!!!! Ok...
It may be true that you can get ancient parts everywhere, except around my area, a P100 at a local store is almost as much as ordering a new duron system. And besides, why would I want to waste money on Intel ???
If mp3's are done properly, you can't hardly even notice a difference from cd audio, so go ahead and blow some more smoke and let me know when you come up with a valid answer for everyone. I was just offering a different Option... |

The yellow pages? WTF?? I know most of the computer store owners personally, and an old sys like that cost $2-300! this area sucks for old computers

In DK, a celeron 300 (The ones we clock to 5-600 MHz) costs (in US$) around 150-200$ all included (64MB / 4GB / Monitor / 16x CD / and sometimes even printer). ![]() Last edited by Clauzii : 08-30-2001 at 07:29 AM. |
