HP CD burner has communication failure

on my HP 9300 series internal CD burner, whenever i try to burn an audio cd, i get a communication failure after burning a few tracks. sometimes it burns 2 tracks, sometimes it burns 9. I have tried using EZ CD Creator and also Nero 5.5. It burns data CDs just fine, and the problem is only with audio CDS. when i start my computer, it shows that the hard drive is the primary IDE master, the CD rom is the primary IDE slave, and the CD burner is the secondary IDE master, and there is no secondary IDE slave. any thoughts?
