Hey kids! Quick question, anyone know of any kick ass dual AMD boards out there that would be great to use with the new 1.5 GHz Palominos that are due soon? Money is no object.

there's the tyan thunder k7 and the tyan tiger, both duelies. The thunder however is quite a bit more expensive. I'm not really sure what the real difference between them is, but i do know that the thunder is more serverish, if that makes any sense. $500 when it was released(thunder) not sure now, but you can get the tiger for 217 or something. check pricewatch.

All the reviews I've read reported negligible differences (i.e. less than 1% in benchmark scores) between the Tyan Tiger and Thunder. The Thunder board has quite a few 'extra features' that the Tiger lacks though, such as on board SCSI.
The TigerMP seems to be in short supply, and vendors are jacking up their prices. They started at ~$250 without S/H, went down to about $210, and now most of them are going back up to $250. The Thunder board will set you back a couple of hundred more. Tyan developed the Thunder with AMD and rumours(?) have it that they signed an exclusive deal in which other motherboard manufacturers are barred from releasing boards based on that chipset within 3 months of the release date. i.e. we should start seeing other dual AthlonMP/DuronMP in late September or early October, and prices of the these boards should drop then. |

well with the thunder you're also getting integrated ati graphics, scsi, built in NIC's or network cards, all the pci slots are 64bit and the agp slot is an agp pro slot. that's about all i can tell you, besides the fact that they're both sweet. Oh yeah the ram slots are also tilted on the thunder so they fit in a 1U rack server, which you don't need if you're using a normal case.
Most of the options that you get with the thunder you'll probably never use, unless you really feel like dropping a ton of money on scsi drives, and other cool stuff. You could really make a screamer with the thunder, but you'd pay out the ass for it. The tiger is more of a consumer product, made sorta for people like you(guessing) that want the fastest sh1t, but don't want to dink around with scsi. I would buy the tiger if i had a choice, but that's just because i don't need the super fast drive access the scsi provides, granted it'd be nice to have, but it's really expensive. here's a tiger review written as it would seem by fobs, the english is kinda bad, or not edited well... http://www.socketa.com/reviews/tyan/tigermp/ and there's a thunder review kinda, but already in server form. http://www.anandtech.com/IT/showdoc.html?i=1514 |

Perhaps I've been around engineers too long. ![]() Anyways, according to the inquirer, Gigabyte just announced their version of the board. You can read it here. |
