Setting DMZ on NetgearRT314
 

I am not able to dial anybody but am able to connect to ILS server fine.
I have done abouts days of research and now it's my d@mn router, how do I set up a DMZ for my system?

The RT311, RT314, RP114, MR314 and RO318 routers support DMZ. DMZ in this case means that you can specify a PC on your local network that the router will forward all unsolicited incoming packets to. This allows that PC to host services and it solves many incompatibilities between NAT and games. In our port forwarding setup (PORTS menu), you can declare one PC to be Default Server, and that is the same as what others call DMZ.

In this application, DMZ (DeMilitarized Zone) is really a misnomer. DMZ originally refered to a third Ethernet port on a firewall router. This port is isolated from the LAN so that a DMZ PC can be made accessible to the Internet, but if it is hacked, the hacker can't use it to reach your other PCs.

I thought that DMZ was the option to make the computer accessable *FROM* the internet. Meaning you can access it from outside commands like telnet? Is this wrong?

nhbilly, what exactly is your setup? What type of router? how is it configured? I have set up a bunch of different routers so I have run into my share of problems.

You are correct, that is the purpose of a DMZ. But if you are running NAT (which most firewall/routers run), it is sometimes necessary to stick a computer in a DMZ to be able to run certain programs. For example, some games won't communicate properly because they think their IP address is one thing, while the server thinks its another. VPN is another application that can sometimes have trouble with NAT.

I have a Netgear RT314.
I have the option in my web config to set IP forwarding etc......
But I don't really know how too.
Well I tried it once and screwed the router up. I had to connected to it thru the serial port and flashed the ROM. I don't really wanna do that again.
Just wondering if anyone setup a the DMZ before on this machine and if they can show me how to do it with alot of deatail would be cool......
