The retail price of the Audigy Xgamer or Audigy MP3+ is $99 (US). It can be found cheaper online. Hardly expensive.

The next cheaper cards are Turtle Beach Santa Cruz ($79.95 MSRP) or Philips Acoustic Edge.

You don't have to go with the audigy. You can still get the Sound Blaster Live! 5.1 OEM card for around 25-30 bucks.

I don't think this'll stop anything though - the better you idiot-proof a system, the more impressive the idiot becomes.

Or since you're looking for a kt266a mobo anyway, try the soyo dragon+, the onboard audio is some high quality stuff.

i have the SB live Platinum full version. I can imagine since it cost me $150 a 1.5 years ago, it should b way cheaper now. Anyway, you can get this card minus the "Live Drive" too and it is a sweet card.

some people have trouble with the SoundBlaster running in a KT266A mobo.

The Soyo's Onboard audio IMO is just as good if not better than the Santa Cruz.
