okay this is probably the dumbest question ever..
im installing a chassis fan and it came with a cable which looks to be a power cable male on one end and female on the other, with a 3 pin header on it as well...this cable is totally separate from the fan, which has its own 3 pin header which is what im assuming is what goes onto the mobo....so what is the purpose of this other cable?? j diggity |

Yep, molex adapter with pass through. So you can hook it up to the PS instead of the mobo and not lose one of you molex connections.

Yeah, you can plug the fan straight to your motherboard. Depending on your motherboard, doing so you can monitor your RPM and can be temp controlled by it. You can use the other set of wires to just hook it up to any free molex connector so when your comp turns on, your fan will also turn on.
If you don't want your molex adaptor, send it my way. I'm short one connector for my baybus... :upset: |

it's generally a bad idea to be plugging case fans into your mobo, they can pull too much current and screw up the fan headers it (the mobo).
if you really wanna monitor the rpms then cut the red and black wires and solder them to the red and black wires on teh adaptor then use the adaptor to power it. this will leave you with the three pin thing with just a yellow wire, you can plug this into your motherboard without worrying at all. not all fans will screw up your fan headers but i personally would rather spend 2 minutes stripping and soldering wires then ruin the fan header on my motherboard. |
