3 HD's????

hey guys, is it possible if for example i have:

2 cd drives
1 floppy
2 hard drives

to connect a third hard drive internally somehow? cause i think i've used all my ide connections...

internally of course

i want a third drive just as a sort of temp drive, cause my main hard drive is for my programs, a secondary hard drive for all my files (i.e. mp3's, mpegs, jpegs, docs...etc...), and the third would be my video editing hard drive, just for the tempory storage of the video capture before it is compressed.

is it possible?

i do know that i really don't need 2 cd drives, and i COULD use my burner as a primary drive, but i want it last longer and not use it to garbage.

any tips?

d@mn ur maxed out already. unless u wanna fork some money out of a IDE RAID card and just use it as a regular IDE channel.
Or get a cheap SCSI card that lets u mount about 15 or more device on one ribbon. Well gotta have SCSI crap too of course.

If it come to it discard the CD ROM. How often do you use it anyways? And beside you have all the music on MP3's : ) Just won't be able to burn CD on the fly.

Assuming both cd-roms are used, you would need something like a Promise Ultra ATA IDE card to get more IDE connections.

Sure - just add a second IDE controller, like the Promise ATA66 or something similar. This would give you 2 more IDE channels, so you could add 4 more IDE devices if you wanted. Should be less than $30.

thanx guys...

and yes, the point of 2 cd drives was so that i can burn on the fly, and also decrease usage on one drives laser (that being the cd-rw)

looking into a promise card now.

thanx

If you want to save some money, you could probably just get an older controller card, unless you are looking for the performance.

i would probably want the faster data transfer, just cause it'd be used just for video capture. the files would be too large, and i'm too impatient.

question:
if my motherboard is ATA 33 and I buy an ATA 100 controller card, will my drives run at 100? or still 33?

Thanks,
NFarzan

that "ATA 33" on your motherboard refers to you onboard IDE Controller, meaning the controller you have built in. If you add an Ultra100 Card, that card would run at ATA100 speed, limited only by the speed of your bus. You are probably on a 100Mhz bus.
So, if you were to add an ATA100 card (You are using an ata100 drive, right??) then your system would run at ATA100

Good Luck

Check in bios. Or use wcpuid. Download from one of the following sites.

No. The card itself would be on a pci bus which is 33Mhz. ATA100 is the speed the hard drive theoretically could burst to.

caard.

get an IDE add on PCI card. ata100 spec. keep you other stuff. dont worry about bus speed. 33mhz PCI means nothin, its still 'ata100 regardless. the pci bus still HAS enough bandwidth to push over 512mb /sec.

I can't wait until HDs have the ability to transfer that fast!

Will hard drives ever get that fast or are we looking at another storage medium to reach transfer rates anywhere near that

near 512mb/SEC external?

standard HD wont even come close to half that.
max we can see with current tech into 5 years is 200-266mb/sec, which actually only means around 120mb/sec INTERNAL.

SErial ATA looks promising though.

Yeah, we'll probably have to wait until there is some new type of storage. The platters are going to have to go.
