How much ram?...

I'm thinking of setting up a file server for my network, and I'm planning on using a RAID controller card and a couple of ATA100 drives to start with...

I'm wondering if I will need a lot of ram for this. I'm thinking about putting in 512 megs...

wait wait, what kind of network are we talkign about here. Is it just your own private little LAN? How many people are going to be accessing this? If it's not going to be something busy then 512MB should be good.

Well, for a while, it might be just me, but I can be very busy!

But anyway, I might share an apartment or house with friends, and then they'd be on my network...

which OS?
for win2k pro and most linux distro's, 512mb is adequate.
For win2k server, you need a lot more, plus a fast processor!
for XP i would probably use 512 or 768, or maybe even more! but dont use XP because it sucks a fat one.
it all depends.

in my apartment i have a 2k pro, non-dedicated file server, sharing about 3000 MP3's, and a few movies, with my room mates, behind a linksys router/firewall. There are 3 people continously using the server, and then i'm on it too since that's my only windows machine.

It has 512mb of ram, and holds up fine! i get no complaints from them about having to wait for files to load more than a second or two. They can even use the server when i'm running mathematica, photoshop, or some other hog.
Its only a P3 550 as well, but i've been tweaking 2k for 6 months so it runs rather quickly.

Wow, thanks... I'm thinking that I'll get Win2k, but that might be a while... In the mean time I'll probably use Win98SE or Me..

well if that's your only option. Those OS dont handle file sharing well, multiple concurrent users affects their instability like you wouldnt beleive. Plus they aren't really able to make use of extra ram. I've never seen a 98 machine that is utilizing over 256 megs of ram. snip

Well, I was an idiot for passing up that XP deal, and I don't think I'm going to have the money for it anytime soon...

How about NT? Older, I know, but I never really heard anything bad about it as an OS.
