I'm wondering if it can be used AT ALL without paying the $10/mo (i.e. without some features)?

Is it just useless if you don't subscribe? I find it hard to believe that a piece of hardware used for as simple a task as video recording would simply be a paperweight without a subscription.

But I could be wrong... stranger things have happened

I think without a subscription you can use it like a VCR with manual recording...

Maybe you should convert it into a Linux Box
