it makes a big difference!!
All the AK31 motherboards that are before 3.1 use the KT266 chipset instead the of the KT266A chipset. I wouldn't get that motherboard if I were you.

The version number may be silkscreened onto the motherboard itself.

If the Northbridge doesn't have a fan or heatsink on it, he can see which chipset it is.

Sorry, I don't have a manual so I wouldn't be able to tell you if the manual is a good indication, but if his manual says it is a version 2.0 I would believe it. I think the north bridge on the motherboard should indicate whether it is a kt266 or a kt266A but in order to see it they would have to remove the chipset heatsink and fan.

From the pictures of the motherboard that I've seen, the south bridge is the chip that doesn't have anything on it, but it is the north bridge that says whether or not it is a kt266 or kt266a and I think that chip does have a heatsink and fan on it.

Yes, the north bridge is under the fan that is next to the cpu socket, it should be the only fan on the motherboard

this is what the guy said

"ok...there was no printing of any kind under the fan and anywhere else on the MB. the manual says it has a VIA KT266, VT8366/VT8233 Chipset "

so................

Try to get out of buying the motherboard. You probably don't want one that uses the kt266 chipset, spend the extra cash and get a motherboard that uses the kt266a.
