Go for ak31 r3.1 its cheap, stable and fast

its only 77.00 on pricewatch

MSI is a good stable mobo, but not much for an overclocker

if you have the $$$$$ go for soyo dragon. Great features Great onboard audio.

i don't really plan on overclocking. just want a motherboard that is stable, well known to be good, and be upgradable to some degree. thanks for advice though.

if you can afford it the dragon + is definately the choice for me. No messing with PCI Audio because of it's 6 channel built in and the built in ethernet LAN capability. This alone makes it worth it IMO because you can save on the ethernet and Soundcards.

Well, I think the best option for someone who is a first time builder is something that will give you the least hassles. I would personally go with the DRAGON+ or the 8KHA+, but that's just me. With having as much already built-in on the Soyo, I'd say go with that. There will be less things to deal with as you add extras. If you don't have the money for a Soyo, I'd say go with the Epox. It is cheaper, but from everything I've heard, is very stable and realiable in it's own right.

It is stable; a decent performer; a good over-clocker; about $50-60 cheaper than the DRAGON+.

I just got the epox 8K7A and a XP1600 last week.
The Epox motherboard is nice and simple and cheap.
It's perfect for a first time builder(like I was) and had no problem setting it up using pirated parts from my 2 year old old K6-2 based Compaq.
And for only $75 or so, I highly recomend it as a simple motherboard(with AGP, on board audio, DDR, on board usb, etc...).

Yours is actually an earlier chipset. But the board we are talking about, the 8KHA+ is not that different, otherwise. I'm not sure, haven't checked the price lately, but I think it could be had for around $110.

Oh, like Canadian money is real money.

Since you don't plan to over clock, if you don't like the Soyo, there is also the MSI K7N420 Pro MS-6373 which has a really nice on board Dolby Digital sound, and even built in GeForce 2 MX if you can't afford the video card right now, plus built in network card. Essential computer has them for 163. Not a board for overclocking, but then overclocking an 1800 XP seems a little silly.
