Okay, I was looking at this DSL/Cable Router/Switch the other day. It said it also had a built in 10/100 networking. I'm wondering. Does that mean that it will plug directly into the DSL/Cable line and act as a gateway? Or would I still need to route it through a computer?

What is the make/model? It probably means that it has a built in switch/hub. You plug your modem into the uplink port and then plug in your computers into the hub/switch ports. Voila!

Wait, I don't understand what you are saying. You mean that you plug your modem into the uplink, and that allows you to access the network via your DSL/cable modem? Or do you mean that you plug it into the uplink, and from there, you plug another into the jack? Because the latter sounds more likely. |

Does your cable modem already have a built in router? The router I have has 5 jacks on the back (1 of which is uplink). I plug the DSL modem into the uplink jack. Then i plug each of the other PCs into the remaining jacks. The router both acts as a switch to network my PCs for file sharing and such...and it acts as a router for my modem.
I hope that was clearer |

Yep the Westell Wirespeed can be routed and so can the 5260 (Other Ethernet Based Modem SBC DSL(Pacbell, NevBell, SWBell, SNET, Ameritech) uses. Well actually the 5360 is the one that can be routed, but the 5260 is the same modem without the built in switch. There is a hardware mod to change it, I do'nt know how to do it myself, but shouldn't be too hard to find on the net if you have that modem.

even if it doesnt come with a print server, you still attach the printer to one of the networked computers and use the printer sharing within windows...the computer with the printer has to be on though, only downside.

Actually you don't need any computers on except the one with the file which you wish to print. At least on my SMC Barricade you don't, the CD provides a driver that creates a new port for your computer to connect with the printer. Physically the printer is connected to the router which has a parrallel port on it.
