What to do with?...

On my second system, my main hard drive is a 30 gig Western Digital 5400. For some reason (I've had this problem before with other Western Digital HDs), it won't boot up unless another hard drive is on the ide channel. It's never really bothered me in the past, because I've always had multiple HD's. But now, I since I have my two better HDs in the main system, the only HD I was left with was an old 1.6 gig (and yes,it's very slow).

Anyway, I'm wondering if you guys have any suggestions on what to use it for. It is too small for MP3s, and I'm really at a loss for what to use it for. But I'm sure some of you have some ideas.

Oh, and I'm running WinMe on the computer. Just something to keep in mind.

Doh!!! Sorry, I thought I was in the Hardware forum. Could I get a lift, GAM?

I would, but I need it on the same ide channel, otherwise bios won't recognize the 30 gig.

might as well just keep it there and not even use it..just keep it so you can use the 30gb drive. Too small for mp3..too slow for swap file.

There are sometimes four settings for the jumpers on some hard drives: only drive, master, slave, cable select. If I set some of my drives as a master and there's no other device on the IDE channel, they won't work. I have to set it as an only drive. Using your drive's model number, check the Western Digital web site and see all the jumper settings for that drive. Here's some info that may help you.

I have three different sets of WD drive documentation, here's what I found. Here's a quick diagram of the settings for an only drive setting. The . is an empty pin, * is where the jumper or jumpers are and s is an empty space (no pin).

Ten Pin Connector (1)
..**.
.....

Ten Pin Connector (2)
.....
..**.

Nine Pin Connector
.*..*
s*..*

Here's the settings for master drive setting from the same documentation (in order).

Ten Pin Connector (1)
..*..

Ten Pin Connector (2)
.....

Nine Pin Connector

You can see what your current jumper setting is for master, and use the corresponding single jumper setting above.

Yeah, what Hoser said. Some drives behave differently whether they're MASTER or SINGLE, so check your jumpers.

Too small for MP3s? Just how many mega, giga, or tera bytes of music do you have? I've got a long way to go before I have all my CDs converted to MP3s. I'm about 6% finished, with over 1300 CDs to go. I was converting about 12-15 a night, then I got started with DVD ripping.

haha,I dont' have that many, but you can't really fit a lot on a 1.6 gig drive. Maybe 500-600 songs.

Anyway, hey Dopey, how do you make the swap file in Me? I've never done it before.
