cable modem for ATT

Hi,
I want to switch my pacbell dsl for att cable. They have a special that drops the monthly fee $10/month if you have your own modem and don't need to rent one. They sell a modem themselves for $199. Can I just buy my own generic modem and plug it in? If I can find a modem under $120, it will be worthwhile. This brings me to my 2nd question...any good cable modems out there with built in router and atleast 4 ports? If it doesnt have a router, can i just plug it into the uplink port of my existing switch and share it that way with no other software like ICS?

Thanks

no way to share via my existing switch..i just bought it and don't want it to go to waste. Is cable a static connection (no signing in?) So in theory can't i just plug it into my switch and all my PC's can access it...or is that somehow illegal b/c im only paying for service for 1 PC? I am currently using ICS with my DSL modem but I would like to abandon that...

sorry to ask so many questions, but i'm not too knowledgeable in this field. So, if i buy this router: http://www.linksys.com/products/prod...id=23&prid=142

and run a cat 5 from the uplink in my switch to the LAN port in the router...plug the cable modem in the WAN port...everything should work fine, is there any speed lose since im going throuh modem then router then switch finally to the PC?
