I'm reloading the full ver. of windowsMe.
everything goes smoothly till the System configuration, then it sort of stops and goes into blue screen. Slowly I get that done, but mean time the comp. has to rest. like 10-15-20 min.

When windows starts [ if it starts ] while its loadind it goes through all that memory counting etc.
BUT... there are 2 lines on the top, which I have never seen it on any comp before, but husband swears that its been always there.
I dont think its normal, my gut tells me I may have to work with that.
Here is what I'm reading on the top of screen, before windows loading

Press F10 Key to change selection
Current Selection is....PXE boot using interrupt 18h

any help would be much appreciated

use windows 98SE, 2000 or XP

Me might have been the worst release of windows ever...

but that's my opinion

I don't agree... I've been using Windows Me since it came out. It is essentially the same as 98se, just with a few add-ons. It is every bit as stable as any OS I've worked with... well, maybe not dos.

Anyway, to the problem at hand...

You completely formatted your HD through dos, right?
And all of the bios settings are correct?

If so, I'm thinking it might be a hardware problem, or Windows is having a hard time with some piece of hardware in you system. Maybe try trouble shooting and shuffling some of your hardware in and out. My suggestion would be to take out all but the essential hardware, and then try to reload Windows. Bascially, just fool around with it.

Thank you all for all your help.
Finally I got the windows in, little by little.
During installation, it stop several times, wit blue screen etc.
then I had l to leave it resr for awhile, then start again.
Basikly acted like an old man, had to take a rest after every few steps. Not the windows is stable, but installing software is not permitted. Final conclusion is that the CPU fan is dead.

What you people think?

if the fan is dead, then likely the processor is shot. It might be ok, but that explains the blue screens, as it kept overheating during install. Replace the heatsink/fan, and see if it is more stable, if not, you'll have to replace the processor as well.

This is one of the few times you will hear me say, I hope you don't have an Athlon/Duron. If you do, LPMiller is probably right, and you will have to replace it... if I is an Intel chip, you MIGHT be able to salvage it. Good luck.
