help, my system mysteriously reboots!

hey guys, i don't know what the heck is up with my system...it mysteriously reboots on it's own accord.

at first i thought it was the new avr that i bought, so i plugged my old battery back up. that seem to make the system work fine for a lil bit but today i reboot like 6 times already. i don't think i've added anything new (software or hardware-wise) except for some case fans (3). i'm using a 300W power supply on a athlon 1700+...is that the problem? cause i still have some voltage dips too (from this thread http://www.gotapex.com/forums/showth...threadid=38267 (voltage dips bad for system?) )

any help or suggestions is appreciated.

If you have WinXP... then that sounds like a problem a coworker had. I think he got the latest OS updates from Microsoft... and was doing better.

Voltage could do it, temp could do it. Is there anything in the WinXP event log which mentions anything odd?

Seen it happen on Win98 boxes too. But this was when I unplugged and re-plugged in my keyboard due to the keyboard failing to respond. This was one of the machines I deal with at my day job! :p

i was having trouble just downloading the new xp updates and installing them...so what i did was just unplugged the 3 new fans that i had just installed. and now everything looks to be running fine (other than the cpu hotter than i'd like it to be...knock on wood). so i'm running a 300W power supply on a Asus A7V266 board and an athlon 1700+ XP...is my power supply not up to par??? could that be what was causing the problems...i'm afraid to plug em back in now.

what do you guys think?

See if you have a BIOS setting for temp on. I know the BIOS will monitor system temp. It may be getting hot and the BIOS is restarting your PC.

I love it when the solution is right in the problem like that.

Yeah, it's the PS. 300Watts, even fully rated ones, aren't cutting it any more. Up to 350/400.

so i got the new PSU yesterday and installed it today...when i plug in all the fans it still reboots. but when i unplug them the system works fine. what's up with that? i tried plugging the power connectors in different configurations and still the same problem. the new psu is a 425 watt vs the old 300 watt...i thought that would have solved the problem...any suggestions?

what kind of fans do you have and do you have a lot of USB peripherals on your comp? I think 425 should be enough...

i only have 3 things connected to the usb...a printer, a remote reciever (for the video card) and a usb cable for my digi cam that isn't even connected to my system.

anyways i decided to jimmy-rig my old PSU and dedicate that only for the fans...the problem is that the old psu won't power the fan...i'm guessing cause it's not connected to the mobo. anybody know how i can tell the PSU to turn on?

i believe i have 3 of these fans...sunan 80mm 2900rpm

http://www.frozencpu.com/cgi-bin/qui...ge=search.html

and 2 antec 80mm which aren't that high powered

geez I dunno man, 425 should be enough for all those things you have... If you unplug the USB peripherals and unplug some system fans, does it still reboot?

i had a problem with the same thing, its winXP, u really need to update that and check ur bios like that one guy said, cuz it can restart if ur chip gets too hot, dont konw why it does it when ur fans are cooling it tho, but i'm guessing its a microsoft problem. try going down to windows 2K, more reliable, less ram needed
