Want to ugrade from currently 2 AMD System 1) 500,I have 512 megs of pc133, Vision Tech Personal Cinema 64 meg AGP,Nic, 15 Mator @5400 and 30 WD@7200,AT Case. 2)AMD 400,32meg ELSA Winner II 32 meg AGP,384 megs pc133, 2) 6.5 WD.@5400.
Want to go into XP1700 OR 1800, but having hard time on which MOBO to use,I want to keep the cost down and use my old Curcial pc133 along with the other cards, not looking to overclock but might in the future, just want stable working system to play C-Strike and Wifey to work on word processing. Or the hell with it and overclock Duron 1.2 or Athon 1.4 and see how high it can fly. I know I'll have to get new case/power supply,MB, CPU and HSF, but I want to keep the cost down to budget of $250-$300. Will keep one of the older AMD unit as a back up sense they are all network anyway. Thanks for the help and opinions. Future Power have a 400 Watts P.S. and case for dirt cheap should I chance it or stay with name brand? Can't seem to get how much watts power supply from AMD site for there cpu's. Dam am I doing too much reseach? |

I would suggest upgrading to DDR memory too...it will help a tremendous amount.
If you go with DDR I suggest the Abit KT266A solution or the Epox 8KHA+ KT266A if you don't go DDR then I'm afraid I'm out of the loop on those types of MB

Yeah, if you want to stick with your old PC 133 ram, you'll probably have to go with an older VIA chipset, or I think that SiS makes a chipset that supports both DDR and SDRAM--those boards are pretty cheap too. Also, I think Durons are the best bang for the buck right now. They will show a major improvement over your K6-2/3s. The newer Thoroughbred AMDs will be coming out shortly, and that might change a few things up too...

If you decide to go DDR (which I recommend.. here's a VERY helpful article via Anandtech...
Of course I assume you'll go w/ kt266a chipset. If you're too lazy to read the whole thing... go to the conclusion section. http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.html?i=1578 I'd personally get the Iwill333 board... Got all the abit options.. but $40 cheaper. |

Go with DDR ram instead of PC133! The VIA KT266A chipset kicks a$$... I have the cheapest VIA KT266A MB and it kicks the crap out of the VIA KM133 or KT133 chipsets! Here is the pic:

The XP Chip on the higer end sure seem to have jumped up in price lately. Is this FHS. ok for my system ? not looking to overclock it yet. Was going to get Volcano 7 but Newegg was out of stock on them. Themal Integration Dr.Thermal TI-V77L http://www.thermal-integration.com/ |

I wouldn't suggest the MB with AliMAGIK chipset except the Iwill XP333-R! If you live in Southern California, you could actually wait for Fry's deal (owns www.outpost.com) and get a better deal. I got my Shuttle AK31 MB (KT266A but it's the cheapest of the kind) and the bare XP 1700+ for $159 + tax last week! There is a deal goin' on right now for a XP 1800+ and Epox EP-8KHA+ MB (KT266A) for $179. But anyway congratulation.
