DVD: Lite-on or Toshiba?

Hi guys,

I'm looking for a DVD-ROM and there is a deal going on between Lite-on 16x DVD-ROM for $44 shipped ('cause I can combine it w/my other purchase to save shipping), and Toshiba 16x for $47 shipped.

Any input is appreciated. Please reply in your earliest convenience. The coupon will expire soon!

I'm not sure if Lite-on has a 14x model. . . whats the model number? Also, the Toshiba, is it the SD-M1612? If so that is a solid drive, but if you can find out exactly what model the Lite-on is, it may be a better drive. If you find out that the lite on is the LTD-163, I would buy that one over the Toshiba. But honestly it won't matter that much either way. Both are very good drive manufacturers.

Sorry, my mistake. The lite-on DVD drive is also 16x.

In that case buy the lite-on, its most likely the LTD-163 since I don't know of any other 16x they make.

in my experience....

...toshiba drives are prone to imbalancing and drive noise (sounding like really cheap drives with nasty spin noise). I've owned two Toshiba CDROMS (32x and 40x), and they both got noisey after just less than a year.

i have a cendyne 12x DVD-ROM drive i got about a year and a half ago. turns out its a rebadged hitachi drive. And you know what? its reflashable to a previous BIOS, making it region-free...

of course i reflashed it, what do you think?!?

I'm going to have to ask for some of your input on this, chosen... about the checking the "reflashability" of course...

Oh, and in my experience (I've owned 2 Toshibas: M-1402s), I've never had any problems...

Here's some info on the flashability of the Lite-On LTD-163 drive.

Nice...

Oh, and Chosen, I knew you meant firmware...

I'm more interested in the process. I want to make sure I get it right when *cough* *cough* fixing my drive so it doesn't get messed up.
