How much does a 68pin SCSI RAID card cost?

I have three 9G Baracudas to play with. I'd like to play with RAID 0...wondering how much $$ I'd have to spend...

well u can buy a decent SCSI with 68pin for around 90.00 or less but these SCSI card are not made for RAID, you'll have to run XP or 2000 and apply software RAID provided by the OS. Or you can spend a hell alot. check egay for SCSI RAID. I highly recommend MYLEX as the choice for RAID setup.

oh by if ur hard drive are LVD they support up to 80MB transfer, make sure the SCSI card support 80MB.

I remember hearing something about this last summer but didn't pay it much attention. What is this? Where can I learn more about it? Will it allow the drives to read and write independently, and create a larger, single striped drive (like RAID 0)?

I could be wrong, but I believe from Seagate's web site the drives are 40Mb/s Ultra SCSI (1, not 2) without LVD. So, it seems to me that a 2940 would work for me...maybe I'm wrong...I haven't done SCSI things since the days of working on other's powermacs.

WindowsXP allows you to set up software RAID, however, you cannot use it as your boot drive. You basically have to have a single drive for your OS and have another two to set up as RAID. I'm still in the process of setting up software RAID on my box, so I don't know a lot of the details yet. But it looks pretty easy.

Tekram are decent inexpensive board you should consider, unless u got the $$$ mind as well go for Adaptec.

software RAID sounds good. Could we use IDE drives? If so how can we over come the 4 drive limit with IDE. I have Promise IDE card also.

>Computer Management
>Disk Management

after that you on ur own, I haven't mess with software RAID yet.

I'd sell you my hardly used mylex accelraid 150 card... runs pretty good, even under raid 5. $115 shipped. :-)

It is 68pin, too.

i tried to do the same thing as you, scsi hardware raid, but it turned out to be too expensive. it seems like all the cards i looked at were server-grade cards.
i instead splurged and went for 10,000 rpm drives and a tekram card, and it works great. not raid speed, but better speed than ide.

dont bother with ultra-1. you will notice a performance degradation from time to time. go for ultra2 or maybe even ultra3 if you can find it.
check out the tekram 390-u2b (ultra2, 68pin). its a solid card. i have been having problems with windows XP but i cannot blame it on the raid card. 2000 is running wonderfully on that card though.

These drives are ultra 1, non-LVD. Are you recommending that I don't RAID these? I assume running them on an Ultra2 card, these drives will still run at 40 MB/s.

oh, didnt catch the ultra1 thing before. well yeah the drives will only perform at ultra1 standards, so go to ebay and look for a slightly older card. the cards that come out now are mostly ultra2 and ultra3. you can also probably find a cheaper, older scsi raid card. all new cards are backward compatible too. but in case you get new, faster drives, you cant put them on the same chain as the old & slow drives. Otherwise the whole chain will run at the slower speed.

also, pay attention when buying the card and cables, because i remember hearing stuff about ultra, ultra-wide, ultra-narrow, and all this other stuff that i dont know anything about. just to give you a heads up

it doesnt sound like the software raid is anything amazing. the OS has one more thing to control (hard drive reads and writes) now. considering that, i dont know how fast it would really be.
