Question Am I supposed to buy arctic silver?

I just won an auction on eBay for a volcano 7 hsf for my 1.33 tbird because i thought it looked a lot cooler than one that came with the cpu. Does it really make a difference between using the thermal pad or arctic silver? I don't wanna spend money when i don't need to. thanks

Are you O/Cing your CPU??? If not, just stick with the thermal pad, which comes with the HSF!

With stock CPU speed, the Volcano 7 would do the job well without Artic Silver!

As with anything else better cooling = better running system.
Its only a few degrees but that helps the life of the chip and helps keep temps down in the case. If you have friend who might need some, go halfs. The little arctic silver 3 container has enuff for like 30 cpus. Very thin layer is all you need.

Don't try to sneak that argument by me!

Most modern CPUs are spec'ed to operate up to a core temp of appx. 60C. Even if you run your chip at 50C and halve the lifetime, you're still looking at 10 years (5 minimum) of use from the chip. Now tell me, are you going to be using this PC in 5-10 years? I think not!

Functionally, though, it would be best for Irwin to get some form of thermal paste, as those thermal pads are basically POS!

artic silver ain't worth the cost unless you overclock. It's rarely ever tested at more than 1 or 2 degrees better, and at least 1 of those degrees could simply be room temp variance - it's hard to test accurately for effect without being in a lab.
