need a router

i was planning to get the dlink DI-704P to use with my cable modem (toshiba pcx)
are there any good tips about what to buy when getting a router, any specific instructions, i just thought cable to modem, then modem to router and then the routers to the computers, nething else i should do? it comes with a firewall also. well thankx for any tips u can give me.

I like the Linksys router better myself

Nothing else you need to do but I like my SMC Barricade! I heard horrible stories and DLink network equipment!

I had the D-link router and it was ok. It does what it does and whatever it's doing its doing it now. I eventually switched to the LinkSys and it seems more of a solid piece of hardware.

I've said it before, SMC is the way to go. Great Tech Support and a lifetime warranty. The print server's nice, too.

thankx for the tips, i'll prolly go get the linksys or smc, since everyone seems to be saying its pretty good, my friend has a dlink, and it doens't seem to be working all that great, too bad the linksys doesn't have the built in printer server, but thats okay, everyone in the house thats going to be on the router has their own printer some some strange reason, hehe

I'm sharing a Lexmark E210 laser printer using SMC Barricade! I love the print server!

SMC Barricades are great. I had one running fine. The print server works fine. The Barricade is a cake to set up.

If you want more security than just a NAT, take a look at Netgear routers. They don't have a printer port like the Barricades but they have SPI (stateful packet inspection), keyword content filtering, time of day access controls and more. Personally I'm about to buy the Netgear RO318 to share Internet acess via cable modem with 6~8 computers. Since I'm going to keep on of the computers on at all times, I don't need a printer port on the router to serve as a print server.
