I read this on another web page:
"Also, you can slow down the top end by adding .1k or .5k in series" Has anyone done this? |

ok now...answer me this. why do you want it quiet!? Why not blast it out and provide maximum cooling and turn up your speakers when playing that game or put on some headphones?
I never understand why peple need a quiet PC...just turn up the volume.

I use my computer actively and passively. Actively for playing games, etc, passively for programming, web surfing, emailing, or just downloading. Sometimes leave it on overnight (less because of the noise).

hrm...still i don't really see a need for a quiet computer...maybe because my sound system is LOUD!
Anyhow...i'd like to know how to lock it at the fastest speed. |

Hey just diggin up this old post that nobody really answered...I too have a volcano 7 and I'm sick of the noise! I use it for reports and web browsing a lot, and occasionally a game. I need to be able to leave the comp on the whole day and possibly during the night without having a ringing in the ol' ear.
Thanks for any help!

I tried the 7V mod and I expected my 5000 max rpm fan to at least drop to 4000 rpm...but it's like 4200 right now
I connected the red molex wires to the black on the conector, and yet I still get 4200+...argh the noise! hehee any other tips/mods that would help with the noisy fan? |

You might want to try swapping out their 80mm fan with a quieter one.

I was thinking about doing that and switching the volcano 7 53 cfm/39 dba with a 25 cfm/22 dba NMB fan, but I'm scared that it's not enough power and my cpu will fry. ![]() |

Give it a try. Just closely monitor the temp for the first few days. Put a load on it and see if it goes up beyond your comfort level. |

Yep... it can work.
About 3 months ago, I did exactly what Merlin suggested. Yanked the 80mm off my Volcano7, and plugged a much more quiet one on there. Between that and my Enermax Whisper power supply, my pc is almost silent now. That's really nice...

So you guys are pretty sure the processor won't fry with such a weak fan on? I'd really be mad at myself if that happened.

If your heatsink is attached properly, with some thermal paste, it's pretty unlikely you'll fry the cpu. Even a cheap, crappy heatsink will shed enough heat to keep a cpu from imploding immediately. If your ambient (room) temp is high, and you're running a heavy load, your cpu temps might climb higher than is adviseable... but it won't happen instantly, and it won't fry your cpu, unless you leave the temps too high for too long. Attach your fan, and load up something that'll give the cpu a workout. Watch your temps closely. see what happens. If temps get too high, shut 'er down and pop your faster fan back on. If temps stay acceptable with the quieter fan on there, you're probably fine. Just keep an eye on it for a couple of weeks until you're sure. If you're not overclocking, anything under 55C under load is probably fine. If you ARE overclocking, you'll want to keep it cooler, under 45C, or ideally under 40C, to improve your chances at stability. |

i have a volcano 7+. it has a manual speed control which is good for quiet browsing and heavy gaming.
what kind of cpu are you running? if its an intel, do you have the stock cooler? that stock cooler is perfect and runs much quieter than the volc7. good luck -jel ![]() |
