Kenwood 72X CD Drives..?
Does anyone know if these drives are any good? Do they function well and are they actually significantly faster than an average drive? I am looking into buying one. I'm noticing that installing new games that are up to 1.5GB in size take a long time. What do you think?

that is a great drive, I know it uses 5 lasers instead of the normal one that the rest use, that is about all I know though....

I tested one against some 40X's-52X's a while ago...
Almost two years ago actually...
What I found was that it was not faster than the 52X's, but it was considerably quieter. CDA ripped at 15X. Because of the price of the 72X's, my company (I worked for a popular computer assembler) decided to stay with Toshiba CDs

My computer situation was sort of a sad story. My father was into repairing PC's and so forth and still is. That's where I got all of my stuff. I had a killer system about 2 years ago until he started swapping stuff with me that he needed for clients computers and this is why I ended up with a crappy system now. My relationship isn't good with him either so this is why I need to start upgrading it myself. I had a Toshiba 48X drive that I loved. I ended up giving it up for a DVD drive. So now when I upgrade I'm going to start with a fast regular CD drive, then get a nice burner(Also had a Plextor 10/12/24) and a Pioneer 16x DVD drive.

The 40X TrueX and 52X TrueX's to a lesser extent were problematic. In fact Kenwood got sued over it before fixing the problem. The 62X TrueX's and 72X TrueX's were just fine.
My 52X TrueX is still going strong after 3 years.  And yes its nice and quiet unlike some dvd-rom drives. I haven't seen any TrueX cd-rom drive available for purchase for months. With dvd-rom drives out there people have little need for them. |

heh
my friend has had some problems with that drive. First of all his cds would be burning hot like after he installed something from a cd, and some of his game cds just blew up inside of it.

I've got a TrueX drive that I used to use and it was a little quirky. Games would load fast, and the drive was very quiet. Since it was reading several tracks at once, it could spin slower. It didn't rip CDs as well as I thought it would. If you're looking to do that, get a Plextor, TDK or similar drive. The drive did have problems with some CDs, getting errors while reading them. None of my other drives had that problem.

I have a 72x truex drive too... I wouldnt ever purchase anything else. The speed is great, but teh noise level is what has satisfied me the most. I have never, ever heard it spin up and access the cd's. Worked flawlessly for 3+ years now. If you can still find one, snag it.

I have the 52X kenwood drive, although its shot. I bought it about 2 years ago and when it worked, it was great. It was quiet and fast..two things that i really liked it.
The problem is that I lost my receipt (showing the day that I bought it) and then when my system crapped out, it went too. I contacted Kenwood, who said they would gladly replace or repair it...so long as I provided a copy of the original sales receipt. I told them that i didnt have my receipt they said, we're sorry. Well what can you do.

I have the 40x or 42x (whichever it is, I forget) in IDE flavor.
I believe the 52x was most popular in the SCSI flav. Get one if you can. Mine is REALLY nice. Nothing seems to outrun it or overstress it. Get one if you can find one. And yes, it's quiet. The five laser feature allows it to spin slower (quieter) but still give the high outputs. Get one. Dave. Did I mention that you should get one? And let me know where you find them. |

I have a 52x, the first one worked for a couple months, then started acting up, had to RMA it... Then the RMAed one started acting quirky after another couple months. I emailed again to try and RMA and they never responded to my emails!!! Since then it just sits collecting dust, occationally I hook it up to a test computer when I need a temp cd-rom.
However, when it was working, it was quiet, and it read the entire CD (inner & outer data) was all consistently fast. If they say the 72x's are good, I would go for one of those, but I would avoide the 52x's and 42x(?) ones on ebay... |

justdeals.com has a Compaq/TrueX 52X for $19.95 plus shipping. Good deal? I got a refurbished Logitech mouse from them a few years back and it had to be returned, but they did give me one that works.
