cd rom question(s)

ive noticed lately with a few computers i have worked on that they sometimes freeze up when the cd-rom starts spining and then require a reboot.

1. why does this happen?
2. what prevents it?
and lastly and probly most importantly,
3. what brand of drive will never have this sort of problem?

1) I think it might be the media as much as the drive itself. I've had this happen on many occasions, and several times, the CD itself turned out to be damaged. Other than that, I'm not sure what exactly could cause it.

2) I don't know how to prevent it.

3) I'm not sure on this one either, but I've noticed that my Plexor hangs far less often than my Toshiba drive...
