Dual Proc?
Alrighty my peoples.
I'm building a computer for my artsy fartsy friend. She'll be using this comp for a lot of photshop kind of stuff. I was wondering... does dual procing give a GREAT performance boost in applicaions like photoshop? I'm debating if the cost of dual procing is worth it. Please let me know.. thanks. BTW.... if it is... what's the best DUAL AMD mobo to get? |

You might be interested in reading this...
http://www.tech-report.com/reviews/2...s/index.x?pg=1 (link pulled from the front page) Anyway, to sum up, you will only see advantages of dual processors on certain applications and under certain conditions. It almost seems as though the harder you push a dually rig, the faster it gets. I'm still not sure if photoshop is enough of a reason on its own though--my K6-2 400 runs it perfectly. ![]()

The dual processors would only be useful if the program and drivers take advantage of this. On my system, Windows/Linux both somewhat balance the load on both processors... which is good for some speed up but not much else.
One of my friends runs a specific audio mixing program (forgot the name off-hand) which is pretty processor intensive. On a single-processor system, the system is basically unusable which it's working. However, on the dual system, all the processing is set to one CPU, which allows the other CPU to handle the GUI among other things. IMHO, this is only real use for dual processors for home usage. If I'm doing something intensive (like ripping a DVD), I'd like a better response time on the GUI. Maybe I'd like to browse while this is happening. Or if I'm burning something to CD (and don't have burn-proof), I'd like to dedicate one processor to burning. You'd be better off getting a 1GHz processor than 500MHzx2, unless Photoshop takes advantage of this. There are no P4 duals yet. |

Normally I'd belittle you but the person is described as "artsy-fartsy" so maybe a G4 is the correct choice. |

W/ the looks of it.. seems like dual procing doesn't sound as great as it's all worked up to be. I think I'll just go T-Bred and raid... like usual.
Anyone know how well 4 SE Western Digital drives do in a raid 0 config? MACINTOSH???? what the heck is that? |

4?! I have 3 in a RAID 5 setup.. I did that so at least if one goes bad, I don't lose any of my stuff. If you're putting 4 in a RAID 0 setup.. geez.. Would hate to see one of those suckers fail on you [knock on wood] |

Get a Mac if you want to use photoshop and if you want a pretty box. Or, build that PC if you want to do a lot of things.

Ya, that is probably fast. Why does it have to be sooo much though? I guess that Sun logo is expensive. |

You think Sun is expensive, have a peep at SGI - the Octane2 with high end graphics is about twice that
http://www.sgi.com/workstations/octane2/ UNIX graphics workstations are crazy expensive... the IBM RS6000 runs about $50k. A single 73GB drive for that machine from IBM is $3000. I still don't understand how they can get away with charging so much for these systems. It's no wonder corporations are switching to W2K. |
