TV out signal

Ok, so I just got a nice 32" Sharp TV (refurb $329 baby at Frys!), and was excited to watch some dvd's from my laptop (Ashton Digtal: do not buy one, service/hardware both suck!). I plug in the RCA TV out to TV... okay, so I see my desktop on my TV. Resolution sucks, but okay, when I turn on Win DVD (unmaximized), I can't see the movie playin w/in Win DVD, but I can still see the surrounding desktop.

Suggestions?

Many DVD Progs, very much including WinDVD, detect the presence of Macrovision and a TVout and stop functioning, to keep computers from becoming DVD Copying machines. Your best bet is to extract the DVD with SmartRipper to remove macrovision, then play the DVD With WinDVD. Time consuming, and you need 6G per disc, but it should work.

I don't know what type of video is in that machine, but on my desktop machine at home with a Radeon 8500, when using WinDVD if I want to view the output of a DVD on my TV, I have to go into the display settings and change my TV to be the primary display and my LCD panel to be my secondary display. In that setup, the movie shows up on the TV but not on the LCD panel. Otherwise, it shows up on the LCD panel and not the TV.

I've heard that the latest PowerDVD XP will work on multiple displays, but have not tested that myself yet.

The quality of the rip should be the same as what you would get if you were playing it off the dvd itself, using smart ripper is only taking the files off the dvd and putting them onto your hard drive, I don't believe any conversion is being done, you just need to have a player that can play files with a .vob extension.

It's not my style, because if I want to *copy* a DVD, I covert it to DIVX. One irritance though: you will not have the ability to cue to chapters, as WinDVD sees each file (vob file) as a separate chapter. Also, you dont get the menus in most cases, even when ripping the entire disc.
