help plz
So one day I'm buring a cd and my computer restarts for no apparent reason in the middle of it. Now my computer doesnt read that my drive is there. It has power; I can open and close it, its just that my computer wont read taht its there.
(I'm using WIN-XP and its a Toshiba CD-RW/DVD-ROM Drive.)

does it show up when you check your system hardware?
right click "my computer"--->click "hardware" tab--->click device manager if it does, try deleting it and "add new hardware" under control panel, if it doesn't show up, try "add new hardware" anyways.

d'oh
i remember this happening to me too, here's some other things to check... check the jumpers on your drive, make sure they are in the right position...i.e. slave vs master. and make sure that your ide cables are properly in place. i've had both things happen to me when i replace my ide cables with rounded ones. first time i hooked up my drives incorrectly and they didn't show up, after i realized what i did and corrected it, i didn't securely plug one in...so try that, it might be something as simple as the jumper... |

I've checked them a few times, but I'll check again to make sure. Thanks for help. I also emailed the site i bought it from, hopefully they can help too

Does it show up in the BIOS or while you boot? This will tell you if it is a software or hardware problem.
Try a different drive. If another good drive doesn't work, it must be the mainboard or cable. Try a different IDE cable. Try another IDE channel. Check your BOIS setting, they should all be set to AUTO for drive detection. If and when you do get it working, flash the firmware on the drive to the latest version.

This happenes with my DVD drive.
Try this: 1. Unplug your drive (just the power cord) 2. Turn on your comp and let it detect the remaining stuff that still is plugged in. 3. Turn it off 4. Plug the drive back in Maybe it'll work..that's what works with mine.
