Question How Fast?

I'm curious... just how fast was/is the Cray II supercomputer?

Typical speed is/was 0kmph. About 300kph when dropped out of a plane.

Thats my way of saying "I don't know, and I'm bored."

haha, well... I'm guessing it is before most of the G|A? members' time...

But I'm figuring that the average desktop today could outperform it...

ripped from a cheesy french site....

"1985 should be waited until to see the first supercomputer exceeding the theoretical power of 1 gigaflops: the CRAY II equipped with 4 procresseurs with 250 MHz."

have a nice day

Something slightly related...the G4 Powerbook was the first notebook faster then a gigaflop. Since a supercomputer was defined as one that could do a gigaflop, Apple marketed the G4 Powerbook as "the world's first portable supercomputer."

Outpreformed by the average desktop? I think so, seeing as how something around 1.5GHz should outrun the old 400/500MHz G4.

I should hope so. If a 500mhz G4 was better than a P4 1.5 I think Mac wouldnt have the market share problem they have.

You might be surprised...

Hey, Darth... what would be the chance of reviewing a Mac system for 3-D gaming?

True...

Too bad the GeForce 4 Ti's aren't Mac compatible... I wonder if the new Matrox cards will be...

You cannot really compare RISC and CISC CPus in the way you are trying to. The arcitecture are so different that it is impossible to say a 1.5Ghz P4 is faster than 800Mhz G4. The G4 has a stronger FPU by far. The G4 is faster per Mhz than the P4 however it is limited because of extreme heat at high Mhz. Since Apple likes to avoid fans and such they are working on other methods of cooling.

Think about it this way. You can run 40yards in 8seconds or so, but the other guy also runs in 8 seconds but took less steps to get there. You moved faster, but since he took less steps it took the same amount of time.

A G4 vs a P4 in Photoshop would be about 500Mhz G4 being equal to 1Ghz P4. Sure it has hardly any games on the Mac, but alot of good ones are comming.

Also just a note...the Mac does have a version of the GF4 Ti but I have no idea whether it's the 4400/4600 or what PC version is equivelant.

I also forgot to mention. The market share held by the PC isn't because of the P4 or Intel. AMD still has a large userbase and the real draw is the amount of software avaiable for the Windows OS.

I was going to make a comment on this, but then I realized the audience...
